Memphis Redbirds News Release
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis Redbirds handed the division-rival Iowa Cubs an 8-5 defeat on Saturday night at AutoZone Park in the first game of a four-game series.
First baseman Brock Peterson went 3-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored to lead the charge for the Redbirds. Second baseman Kolten Wong and outfielder Jamie Romak each added triples in the victory.
Third baseman Jermaine Curtis hit a three-run home run, which was his first of the season and first since May 26, 2012 at Corpus Christi.
Memphis starting pitcher Nick Additon (1-1) allowed two runs on four hits while striking out five innings for the victory.
Peterson's first-inning solo blast down the left field line gave the Redbirds a 1-0 advantage. The long ball was the slugger's fourth of the season.
Memphis tacked on three more runs with four consecutive hits to lead off the bottom of the fourth. After singles by outfielder Oscar Taveras and Peterson, Romak crushed a two-run triple off the center field wall. Shortstop Ryan Jackson concluded the scoring with an RBI single to right field.
Iowa scored their first two runs in the top of the fifth inning on to three consecutive base hits. Luis Flores brought home the first run with an RBI single, followed by Brent Lillibridge scoring on the subsequent wild pitch from Additon.
The Redbirds moved to an 8-2 advantage in the next frame, quickly added their first run with two swings of the bat. After Wong tripled to center, Taveras hammered the first pitch he saw up the middle to center. Three batters later, Curtis went deep off reliever Esmailin Caridad over the left wall.
Four straight hits off reliever Sam Freeman to open the top of the eighth inning brought the Cubs within three runs at 8-5. Ty Wright's two-run double accounted for the first two runs. Two batters later with Wright on third, Lillibridge grounded into a double play for the final run of the game.
Barret Browning pitched two shutout innings in relief. Freeman was touched for three runs. Closer Victor Marte worked around two hits to pick up third consecutive save.
Iowa starter Chris Rusin (1-2) was tagged for seven runs on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings for the loss.
The Redbirds and Cubs continue their series at 1:35pm CT on Sunday afternoon. Left-hander John Gast (2-0, 0.00) will start for Memphis against Iowa right-hander Drew Carpenter (1-2, 8.10).
Dogs receive FREE admission for Bark in the Ballpark on Sunday, featuring Jake the Diamond Dog. Fans can also enjoy $1 hot dogs, while kids run the bases after the game.
