Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release
FARGO, N.D. - The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (28-34) dropped the series opener to the Lincoln SaltDogs (30-32) by a score of 8-2 on Tuesday night at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo, ND.
The SaltDogs jumped on the RedHawks starter, Dan Blewett, early in the game and never looked back. In the second inning, Howell reached on a base hit and was able to move around the bases on an error by Blewett. Howell ended up scoring on a double play ball later in the inning.
Lincoln went right back to work in the third inning. Vance Albitz started the rally with a one out base hit. Blewett walked the next two batters to load the bases. Phil Hawke hit a sacrifice fly to score Albitz. Then, Howell lined a double down the left field line to score two more runs. Howell wound up scoring on a single by Jorge Cortes.
Josh Smith entered the game in the fourth inning with hopes to limit the damage and give his team a chance to comeback. Smith did exactly that pitching three innings without allowing a run or a hit.
However, the SaltDogs' offense returned to action in the seventh and eighth innings to spread their lead to 8-0. Joe Ramos doubled and scored in the seventh inning. Howell led off the eighth inning with a solo home run, and Cortes singled and scored in the eighth inning as well.
Fargo-Moorhead broke the shutout in the ninth inning using doubles by C.J. Retherford, Kole Zimmerman, and Zach Penprase to score two runs. The deficit was too much to overcome though as the RedHawks fell 8-2.
Six of the RedHawks' eight hits on the night were doubles, but they were unable to get the timely hits needed to keep pace with the SaltDogs. Penprase led the team going 2-for-5 with a run batted in.
Lincoln's attack was spearheaded by Howell who finished the night only a triple shy of the cycle. Howell was 4-for-5 with three runs batted in and three runs scored.
Vince Bongiovanni pitched six innings of scoreless baseball in his debut as a SaltDog. The RedHawks managed only three hits and three walks off him in his first win of the season. Dan Blewett received the loss for the RedHawks, his second of the season.
The RedHawks will play the second game of their three-game series against the Lincoln SaltDogs on Wednesday night. Game time is set for 7:02 pm. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by calling 701-235-6161, online at www.fmredhawks.com, or at the Ticket Office during business hours.
