
Singleton Sets Tone in Return to Wingnuts

SHREVEPORT, LA- The Wichita Wingnuts beat the Shreveport-Bossier Captains 9-2 at Fair Grounds Field on Tuesday night.
Nick Singleton allowed one hit and one earned run in five and one-third innings in his return to the Wingnuts, while rookie right fielder Peter Barrows collected three hits for a second straight night and chipped in three RBI. Singleton and four Wichita relievers combined for a two-hitter in the win.
Wichita jumped on Captains' starter Steve Kent for three runs in the top of the first. Mike Conroy led off the game with a walk and took third on Josh Horn's hit-and-run single to right field. Brent Clevlen drove in Conroy with a line drive single to left. Juan Richardson lifted a flyball to right field that allowed Horn to take third and Clevlen to take second. Jorge Delgado made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly to deep center that scored Horn. Two batters later, and With Clevlen now on third, Barrows legged out an infield single that scored Wichita's third run of the inning.
Mike Provencher led off the bottom of the first with an infield single up the middle for the only hit the Captains managed against Singleton. Singleton stranded two in the first, and following a leadoff walk to Uriak Marquez in the second, went on to retire the next 12 Captains' hitters in a row. Singleton struck out seven and walked just two while improving to 9-0 this season.
Workman drew a leadoff walk in the top of the fourth and scored from first on a long double to left-center from Barrows that gave Wichita a 4-0 lead.
Barrows drove in Workman from first base again in the top of the sixth, hitting another line drive double to left-center.
Shreveport-Bossier scored its only runs in the bottom of the sixth. With two on and one out, Bryan Sabatella doubled to right-center field against Brandon Mathes to bring the Captains within three runs. Mathes retired the next two hitters to end the rally, starting a run of 11 in a row by the Wingnuts' bullpen to close out the contest.
The Wingnuts broke the game open for good in the top of the eighth. Richardson drew a leadoff walk, setting up a long, two-run home run over the left field fence by Delgado. Wichita took advantage of walks in the eighth to Workman and Barrows with Conroy and Horn each driving in a run with two outs.
Matt Nevarez, Marcos Tabata, and Kendy Batista each worked a perfect inning in the seventh, eighth, and ninth respectively. Tabata struck out the side during his frame.
Kent took the loss, allowing three earned runs on three hits in two innings of work. Kent walked one and struck out one.
Workman reached base four times with a hit, two walks, and a hit batsman. Workman scored three runs.
