American Association Game Recaps

Winnipeg 3, Sioux City 2 (10 innings)

It wasn't quite the way they planned it for sure, but Winnipeg took a 3-2 win over Sioux City in 10 innings Tuesday night, a bases-loaded hit batsmen putting the Goldeyes on top to end the game. With men on first and third one batter earlier, Sioux City opted to have pitcher Eddie Delacruz intentionally walk RF Kody Kaiser to put a force out at every bag and home plate. But the ball was never put into play, nullifying the advantage when Delacruz hit SS Wes Long, who became the late-game star with zero hits to his name. In fact, not many Winnipeg batters - or Sioux City players, for that matter - racked up many base knocks, with only Goldeyes C Luis Allen and Explorers LF TJ Bohn accounting for five of the combined 13 hits on the evening. Neither starting pitcher factored in the decision after solid starts, with both Winnipeg's Isaac Hess and Sioux City's Kyle Wright allowing two runs in eight innings.

Lincoln 8, Fargo-Moorhead 2

Saltdogs C Jeff Howell was in a groove on Tuesday, going 4-for-5 with a homer, three runs and three RBI against the RedHawks. Howell also doubled in Lincoln's 8-2 win, leaving him a triple shy of the cycle. Lincoln starting pitcher Vince Bongiovanni got his first win of the season in his first appearance, throwing six shutout innings while allowing three hits and three walks with five strikeouts. The RedHawks put two runs on the board in the ninth thanks to back-to-back doubles from C Kole Zimmerman and SS Zach Penprase. But it was too little, too late, and 2B Carlo Cota grounded out in the next at-bat, the game was over with Lincoln taking a decisive win.

Gary SouthShore 7, Fort Worth 3

The RailCats bullpen dominated the Cats, going four innings in relief of starter Carlos Rivas and allowing only one Fort Worth hit. Relievers Brian Grening, Will Krout and Travis Minix just kept retiring batters while their teammates at the plate put up three runs in the final four innings to take a 7-3 win over the Cats. RailCats 1B Mike Rohde led the way offensively, going 3-for-3 with a double, two runs and three RBI, the first three runs for Gary SouthShore all coming via Rohde's bat. The Cats had answers for the Gary SouthShore scoring early, trailing by just one after four frames. But the combination of continued offensive output and a dominant bullpen allowed the RailCats to coast to a four-run win.

St. Paul 8, Sioux Falls 1

Saints C Richard Mercada singled in the first two of St. Paul's three first-inning runs, getting his 4-for-4 night started the right way. Mercado also plated the final run in the Saints' 8-1 win over Sioux Falls. With Mercado & Co. racking up the runs, St. Paul starting pitcher Donald Brandt finessed his way to allowing only one run in six and two-thirds innings, working around 10 hits and a walk. Brandt also registered four strikeouts in his time on the mound before the bullpen duo of Caleb Thielbar and Kris Edwards entered to close the door on the Pheasants. Thielbar allowed two hits with two strikeouts in one and a third innings before Edwards pitched a perfect ninth to finish off Sioux Falls.

Kansas City 8, Amarillo 6

Facing a deficit for the first time all night, Kansas City put on a two-out rally in the seventh to climb back on top to beat the Sox of Amarillo, 8-6. Working off the momentum of a Ray Sadler home run early in the frame, the T-Bones got back-to-back doubles from C Johnny Bowden and a pinch-hitting Gerardo Caceres, turning a 6-5 hole into an 8-6 advantage. Sadler's seventh-inning home run was just one of three hits for the 30-year-old righty, who scored twice and batted in three. The Sox took their short-lived lead in the top of the seventh, scoring four runs on four hits, capped off by a two-run double from LF Lee Cruz. But those were the last runs for Amarillo, denying the Sox a chance to pull back to .500 at 31-31. Instead they are now tied for third in the Central Division and 30-32. The T-Bones are still a game and a half back of Amarillo at 29-34.

Wichita 9, Shreveport-Bossier 2

The Wichita pitching staff combined to throw a two-hitter against Shreveport-Bossier on Tuesday, and a strong night at the plate helped the Wingnuts cruise to a 9-2 win. Wingnuts starting pitcher Nick Singleton threw into the sixth inning and allowed two runs on a hit and two walks, with both runs coming on a sixth-inning Bryan Sabetella double a batter after Singleton's exit. Offensively, Wingnuts RF Peter Barrows reached base safely in all four plate appearances, going 3-for-3 with a walk, a run and three RBI to pace the Wichita offense. Barrows first hit capped off a three-run first that gave Wichita all the runs it would need to take the win over the Captains. That didn't stop the Wingnuts, however, from putting up more. Already leading 5-2 in the eight, Wichita saw 1B Jorge Delgado knock out a two-run homer to ignite a four-run frame that provided some insurance runs for the Wingnuts. It was Delgado's only hit of the night and his seventh bomb of the season.

El Paso 12, Grand Prairie 6 (In progress - Top 7)

The Diablos of El Paso currently hold a six-run lead over the Grand Prairie AirHogs, 12-6, in the top of the seventh inning. Grand Prairie jumped out to a 3-0 lead. But El Paso answered back with back-to-back three-run innings before exploding for five in the fifth. El Paso C Alberto Espinosa is 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI to lead or co-lead in every category.
