Captains Dealt Seventh Straight Loss as Wichita Pulls Away Late for 9-2 Win

SHREVEPORT, La.---The Wichita Wingnuts scored three runs in the first and pulled away late with a four-run seventh to defeat the Shreveport-Bossier Captains 9-2 at Fair Grounds Field Tuesday night, handing the Captains their seventh straight defeat. Wingnuts hurler Nick Singleton (9-0) won his ninth consecutive outing in his first start since returning to the Wingnuts from a stint in the Mexican League.

The Captains managed just two hits off five Wichita pitchers--a Mike Provencher base hit off Singleton to lead off the bottom of the first and a Bryan Sabatella two-run double in the sixth. Shreveport-Bossier hitters went just 1-for-12 against the Wingnuts relievers with Wichita pitching retiring the last 11 in a row.

Wichita rookie rightfielder Peter Barrows went 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs. He reached bases safely in all four plate appearances.

Steve Kent (0-1) made his Shreveport-Bossier debut, throwing the first two innings of the contest. In the first he walked left fielder Mike Conroy to start the game, then gave up a single to shortstop Josh Horn. Brent Clevlen would start the scoring on an RBI single. Jorge Delgado's sacrifice fly made it 2-0 and Barrows' two-out single scored Clevlen to give Wichita the three-run lead.

The 'Nuts would add runs in the fourth and sixth with Barrows scoring Josh Workman with doubles in both innings.

Aaron Cunningham, who reliever Kent in the third inning, would walk Juan Richardson to start the eighth, then gave up a home run to Jorge Delgado to give Wichita the 7-2 lead. With one on and no one out, Cunningham was lifted for Jake McCarter, who surrendered RBI singles to Conroy and Horn making it 9-2.

Captains outfielder/pitcher Alex Cowart threw a 1-2-3 top of the ninth, striking out two. Cowart has now pitched three scoreless innings on the current home stand. Provencher and Perry were the only Captains hitters to reach base more than once. Shreveport-Bossier's 4-9 hitters went 0-for-19 against Wingnuts pitching.

With the loss, the Captains fall to 28-35 on the season. In addition to losing seven straight, they've dropped 14 of their last 16. The Captains look to salvage the final game of their homestand when they take on Wichita on Wednesday, July 20 on Willis-Knighton Wednesday. Kids eat free with paid admission.

Shreveport-Bossier will throw Osvaldo Rodriguez (3-4, 6.44) to the mound against Wichita lefthander Ryan Hinson (4-6, 4.05). First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. Gates open at 6:05.
