St. Paul Saints News Release
SIOUX FALLS, SD (July 19, 2011) - Facing a 35-year-old rookie the St. Paul Saints did some damage offensively against Sioux Falls Pheasants starter Barry Fowler and their pitchers stranded 13 in an 8-1 win on Tuesday night at Sioux Falls Stadium.
The Saints didn't waste any time taking a commanding lead as they put up a three spot in the first inning. Adam Frost led off with a single to left, extending his hitting streak to a career tying high 10 games. With one out Ole Sheldon singled Frost to second. After a walk to Jason Cooper loaded the bases Richard Mercado roped a two-run single to left and he advanced to second on the throw. Ronnie Bourquin blooped a single to center scoring Cooper and giving the Saints a 3-0 lead.
The only hit the Pheasants got with runners in scoring position came in the second. With one out the Pheasants knocked three straight singles to load the bases. Francisco Leandro, Henry Contreras and Hunter Jobes all singled and with two outs Joe Anthonses singled to left scoring Leandro. That was all Saints starter Donald Brandt and the rest of the pitching staff would allow. Brandt went 6.2 innings allowing one run on 10 hits while walking one and striking out four.
The Saints answered back in the third when Cooper singled and moved to second on a walk to Mercado. Bourquin followed by hitting a grounder to first and Brandon Sing forced Mercado at second, but Anthonsen's return throw to first went awry allowing Cooper to score making it 4-1.
The Saints pounded out two homers in the fifth as Justin Snyder led off with a solo homer to right, his second of the season, to make it 5-1. With two outs Mercado doubled and Bourquin drilled a two-run homer to left, his sixth of the season, to make it 7-1. Mercado finished the night 4-4 with a double, three RBI and a run scored while Bourquin was 2-5 with a homer, three RBI and a run scored.
The same two teams meet in the finale of the three game series, as the Saints go for the sweep, at 12:05 p.m. Wednesday. The Saints are TBA while the Pheasants send RHP Adam Cowart (4-4, 5.31). The game can be heard live on saintsbaseball.com courtesy of the Minnesota Sports Broadcast Network and can be heard on tape delay at 6:00 p.m. on Relevant Radio 1330.
