Redbirds Open Homestand with 5-3 Loss

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Three solo home runs powered the visiting Round Rock Express to a 5-3 win over the Memphis Redbirds on Saturday night at AutoZone Park in the opener of a four-game series.

The Memphis (6-10) offense was limited to five hits in the defeat to Round Rock, which was the club's fourth in five games this season series. Shortstop Dean Anna extended his hitting streak to season-best six games. First baseman Xavier Scruggs recorded his sixth double and team-leading 11th extra-base hit.

Round Rock scored a run in four if the first five innings for a 4-0 advantage. The first two runs were via RBI doubles from Jared Hoying and Alex Hassan. The club's next two runs were solo homers by Chris Gimenez and Ryan Strausborger.

After being held without a hit by Round Rock starter Ross Wolf (2-1) through the first four frames, the Redbirds sent eight to the dish for their three runs in the fifth, cutting the deficit to 4-3.

After a pair of walks and Rafael Ortega breaking up the no-hit bid with an infield bunt single, Anna hammered a two-run single up the middle. Two batters later, outfielder Stephen Piscotty accounted for the third and final run with an RBI base hit to left.

Hanser Alberto capped off the evening with an insurance run in the ninth with a solo homer over the left field wall.

In a spot start, Redbirds right-hander Boone Whiting (0-1) scattered 10 hits four runs in five innings. Called up earlier in the day from Double-A Springfield, pitcher Kurt Heyer followed with three strikeouts over three scoreless frames.

Wolf registered a quality start in the win, surrendering three runs with a pair of strikeouts in six innings.

The Redbirds and Express continue their series at 1:35 pm CT on Sunday afternoon at AutoZone Park. Sunday afternoon is Bark in the Ballpark, where fans will be allowed to bring their dogs to the game. It's also another Prairie Farms Ice Cream Sunday, as 2,500 kids ages 12 and under will receive an ice cream treat upon admission. Gates open at 12:30.
