Memphis Redbirds News Release
Lawrenceville, GA - Then Memphis Redbirds dropped two games at the hands of the Gwinnett Stripers by scores of 5-3 and 5-2 on Saturday night.
The opening game began on Friday night before it was suspended in the bottom of the fourth inning due to a light tower misfunction at Coolray Field.
The Redbirds started the game well when Juan Yepez drove in Kramer Robertson with a single in the first inning. In the third, Nolan Gorman doubled and later scored from second base on a wild pitch to extend the 'Birds lead to 2-0.
Johan Oviedo threw the ball well on Friday night, yielding just two hits and striking out three in 3.2-scoreless frames.
The game resumed on Saturday afternoon and Gwinnett took command. The Stripers scored four times in the bottom of the fifth inning on four hits and two walks.
Phillip Ervin added to the Stripers' lead with a solo home run in the seventh, making it 5-2. The Redbirds put up a fight in the ninth, scoring a run on an RBI double from Brendan Donovan, but stranded runners on second and third to end the game.
The Redbirds struck first in game two as well, scoring twice in the second inning. With two runners on, Connor Thomas hit a ground ball to second that was bobbled, allowing Conner Capel to score. Later in the inning, Nick Plummer singled home Brendan Donovan, extending the lead to 2-0.
Gwinnett made its comeback in the fourth inning, scoring four unearned runs off Thomas. A three-run home run from Johan Camargo was the big blow in the inning. Camargo added an RBI single in the fifth inning, finishing off a four RBI game.
