Gwinnett Stripers News Release

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA. - Yohan Flande allowed only a run over a season-high 7.0 innings, but the Gwinnett Braves' bats couldn't solve Rochester right-hander Liam Hendriks as they were shut down by the Red Wings, 3-1 on Thursday night at Coolray Field. The loss came in the opening game of a 10-game homestand for the G-Braves.

Hendriks (W, 3-0), the No. 7 prospect in the Minnesota Twins system according to Baseball America, yielded only an unearned run on five hits across 7.0 innings, striking out nine while walking two. Relievers Anthony Slama (H, 1), Tyler Robertson (H, 8) and Casey Fien (S, 7) combined on 2.0 scoreless innings with two more strikeouts.

Adam Russell (L, 3-1) entered in a 1-1 game in the eighth inning and hit the first batter, Ray Chang. J.R. Towles followed with a single, and three batters later, Danny Valencia singled home Chang for a 2-1 Rochester lead. Sean Burroughs' RBI groundout boosted the lead to 3-1. Both runs were earned to Russell over 1.0 inning of work.

The Red Wings tallied their lone run off Flande in the second inning, scoring as Clete Thomas drove home Matt Carson with an RBI single. Flande yielded just that run on five hits, walked one and struck out three.

The Gwinnett offense took Flande off the hook for a loss with the tying run in the fourth inning. Josh Wilson singled and scored on a Lance Zawadzki grounder that went for a fielding error on Rochester third baseman Valencia. Wilson went 3-for-4 with the lone run scored on the night.

Wilson and Luis Durango, who went 3-for-3, combined for six of the eight Gwinnett hits in the loss. Ernesto Mejia went 1-for-4 with a single to extend his hitting streak to a team-best 12 games, the longest hitting streak by a G-Brave since Tyler Pastornicky hit in 12-straight from July 26 to August 7 last season.

Burroughs and Towles each went 2-for-4 for the Red Wings, who improve to 3-2 against the G-Braves this year.

The International League South-leading Gwinnett Braves (27-20) play game two of the four-game series with the Rochester Red Wings (20-26) on Friday night at Coolray Field, first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM.
