GAME #46 - ROAD GAME #24 - 7:05 P.M.
ROCHESTER RED WINGS (19-26) at GWINNETT BRAVES (27-19)
RHP LIAM HENDRIKS (2-0, 1.93) vs. LHP JOHAN FLANDE (1-3, 4.46)
RIGHT ON THE BUTTON IN GWINNETT: The Rochester Red Wings tonight begin an 8-game roadtrip with the first of 4 against Gwinnett (Braves). The Wings on Monday will then start a 4-game series at Charlotte (White Sox). Both series account for Rochester's only regular-season visits to these South Division cities. The Red Wings return to Frontier Field June 1 for an 8-game homestand with Columbus (Indians) and Norfolk (Orioles).
a The Red Wings are in the midst of playing 8 straight games against Gwinnett. The club hasn't had that long of a stretch against one team since playing Louisville (Reds) 8 games in a row June 9-17, 2007.
a The Red Wings tonight begin a stretch of playing 16 of 24 games on the road. The stretch comes after the Wings played 30 of their first 45 games at Frontier Field, including 8 as the "road" team against the Empire State Yankees.
a Since sweeping a 2-game series at Syracuse (Nationals) to open the season, the Red Wings have won just one game away from Frontier Field in 13 tries. The lone victory in that time came at Pawtucket (Red Sox) on May 8, when tonight's starter Liam Hendriks won his first start with the Red Wings after being optioned from Minnesota.
ROSTER NEWS: Righthander Cole DeVries on Tuesday had his contract selected by the Minnesota Twins. The 27-year-old Minnesota native is scheduled to start tonight at the Chicago White Sox. DeVries takes the roster spot of Jason Marquis, who was designated for assignment by the Twins.
a DeVries is the 7th Red Wing to get a promotion to the Twins this season, joining catcher Drew Butera, lefthander Scott Diamond, infielder Brian Dozier, outfielder Darin Mastroianni, outfielder Ben Revere, and righthander P.J. Walters. DeVries will be the 2nd Red Wing to making his major league debut in 2012, joining Dozier.
a Also on Tuesday, following the Red Wings game, outfielder Rene Tosoni was transferred to Double-A New Britain and infielder Michael Hollimon was reinstated from the 7-Day Disabled List.
a Tosoni batted .167 with two doubles and five RBI in 21 games. Hollimon was placed on the 7-Day DL April 30 with a right elbow contusion and missed 22 games. The switch-hitter is batting .192 with 2 homers and 2 RBI in 17 games.
CALLING ALL STARS: Online voting for the 2012 Triple-A All-Star Game begins tomorrow. The game will be played at Buffalo's Coca-Cola Field on July 11. Fans can vote simply by visiting RedWingsBaseball.com.
a Leading Red Wings candidates include righthander Anthony Slama, owner of 8 saves, a 0.43 ERA, and a 14.2 consecutive scoreless innings streak; and outfielder Matt Carson, who leads Rochester with a .293 average, 43 hits, 14 extra-base hits, 11 doubles, 12 RBI, 61 total bases, and 20 runs scored.
HOME ON THE RANGE: The Red Wings on Tuesday wrapped up their homestand with a 5-3 record, their first winning homestand longer than 4 games since August 10-16, 2010, when they went 6-2 against Gwinnett (3-1) and Lehigh Valley (3-1).
a The Red Wings are 16-14 at Frontier Field in 2012, including a 12-10 mark as the home team. Rochester is unbeaten in 7 of its 9 series along Morrie Silver Way. They are 3-2-4 in the 9 series thus far.
STEADY NOW, STEADY: Despite losing 2 of their last 3 against Gwinnett at Frontier Field, the Red Wings have still won 5 of their last 8, a stretch that follows a 6-game losing streak May 9-14. One day after scoring a season-high 10 runs and banging out a season-best 18 hits Monday vs. Gwinnett, the Red Wings were held to one run in a 3-1 defeat in the series finale.
a The Red Wings are 10-12 in May and are within reach of their first winning calendar month since August 2009, when they went 17-15. Rochester would need to go 6-2 the rest of the way this month to accomplish the feat.
GOT THAT OUT OF OUR SYSTEM: In 10 games since allowing a season-high 11 runs May 12 at Syracuse (Nationals), the Red Wings have given up just 32 runs for an average of 3.2 per game. In fact, Rochester has given up 4 runs or less in 8 straight games and in 9 of those 10 contests. The lone exception in that time was a 6-4 loss at Syracuse May 14.
a Red Wings' pitchers have issued just 5 walks in their last 4 games. They have allowed 143 walks overall, the 6th-lowest total in the IL.
WHAT A RELIEF!: The Red Wings bullpen has tossed 13.1 consecutive scoreless innings in its last 4-plus games, a stretch that began with a scoreless 9th inning from Tyler Robertson Friday vs. Louisville. Thus, Wings' relievers worked 12.1 straight scoreless innings against Gwinnett in their recently-completed series.
a The bullpen has a 1.41 ERA (5 ER/32.0 IP) in its last 10 games and a 3.44 ERA (57 ER/149.0 IP) in 44 games overall.
GOING FOR A RUN: The Red Wings have scored an International League-low 141 runs, 15 behind the next closest team of Lehigh Valley (Phillies) with 156. Rochester has scored more than 5 runs in a game just 4 times, including twice vs. Gwinnett in the recently completed series: 6 on Saturday and 11 on Monday. The other 2 occasions came Opening Day at Syracuse and May 10 at Pawtucket.
BASEBALL MONTH IN ROCHESTER: The Red Wings and Monroe County have proclaimed May as "Baseball Month in Rochester." Frontier Field is hosting games on 26 of the 31 days in the month, as the Empire State Yankees share the downtown ballpark with the Red Wings. While there is no game today in Rochester, here are the details of Spikes' appearance and the month-long raffle:
a Spikes appearance: St. Agnes School (Avon, NY)
a Money raised from the Baseball Month in Rochester raffle on Tuesday: $353...Month-to-date total: $7,217...all money goes to the non-profit organizations being hosted in the suite.
