New York Red Bulls News Release
RED BULLS LOOK TO EARN REVENGE AGAINST FC DALLAS: The New York Red Bulls continue a five-game homestand on Sunday when they host FC Dallas at Giants Stadium at 3:00 PM ET (TV: MSG, TeleFutura; Radio: WQBU 92.7 FM).
Despite a strong effort, the Red Bulls dropped a 2-0 decision to Chivas USA in their last match on Saturday, Aug. 15 at Giants Stadium. New York hosts a FC Dallas side that is coming off a 2-0 loss at the hands of the Columbus Crew at Crew Stadium last Saturday. Chad Marshall and Eddie Gaven tallied for the defending MLS Cup Champion, as the Crew snapped FC Dallas' two-game winning streak. FC Dallas is currently in a span in which they play four of five games on the road. FC Dallas is currently in seventh place in the Western Conference with 23 points and a 6-10-5 record, four points behind fifth-place Real Salt Lake.
Despite the transfer of U.S. international forward Kenny Cooper to TSV 1860 Munich on July 31, the Hoops have been boosted by the performance of forward Jeff Cunningham, who has nine goals and three assists this season. David Ferreira has chipped in with four goals and four assists while former Red Bulls midfielder Dave van den Bergh, who was traded to FC Dallas on Jan. 13, 2009, along with New York's 14th overall selection in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft in exchange for forward Dominic Oduro and the 11th and 18th overall picks in the draft, leads his team in assists with six. Van den Bergh will be making his first return to Giants Stadium on Sunday.
Cunningham and van den Bergh both played roles in FC Dallas' 2-1 win over the Red Bulls on July 4 at Pizza Hut Park in the first meeting between the teams this season. Cunningham found the back of the net in the 15th minute before knocking in a van den Bergh cross two minutes later for the eventual game-winner. Red Bulls forward Juan Pablo Angel pulled one back for the visitors in the 43rd minute. The Red Bulls are 15-16-2 all-time against FC Dallas and 8-8-1 at Giants Stadium. The Red Bulls have won the last two home encounters against FC Dallas.

RED BULLS FALL TO CHIVAS USA, 2-0: The New York Red Bulls started a five-game homestand Saturday night with a 2-0 loss to Chivas USA at Giants Stadium. Chivas USA forwards Maykel Galindo and Eduardo Lillingston scored the night's goals, as the Red Bulls fell to 2-16-4 (10 pts.) this season.
New York nearly took the lead in the 13th minute. Seth Stammler played the ball wide to midfielder Ernst Oebster on the left wing and his ensuing delivery into the box was headed just wide by forward John Wolyniec. Chivas USA took advantage of the Red Bulls' missed opportunity with a goal two minutes later. Chukwudi Chijindu had the ball on the right side of the Red Bulls' defensive half and found a streaking Galindo in the penalty box. Galindo took a touch before slotting it past goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul from eight-yards-out.
In the 20th minute, Chivas USA almost made it 2-0. Midfielder Sacha Kljestan had possession on the left side of the penalty box and laid it off to Jesse Marsch, who forced Coundoul to make a diving save.
Midfielder Dane Richards was close to tying the match in the 32nd minute. Stammler had possession in the middle of the field and strung a pass to an on-rushing Richards, who rolled it past goalkeeper Zach Thornton and the left post. Soon after, Richards beat Thornton to the ball near the corner flag and tried to curl it into the empty net from a sharp angle, but he could not get his attempt on frame.
With the Red Bulls still trailing, Wolyniec almost took advantage of a Chivas USA miscue in the second half when he intercepted a weak Carey Talley back pass and was in alone on goal. Wolyniec took a few touches and shot it at a diving Thornton, who was off his line. Later, Oebster found Wolyniec with a cross and the forward's glancing header just missed the mark.
The hosts continued to look for the equalizer. In the 73rd minute, Thornton couldn't get to a Danleigh Borman cross and the ball bounced to Stammler, whose first-time volley went past the right post. Four minutes later, Nick Zimmerman blasted a free kick from long range that Thornton acrobatically punched away. Stammler later rushed into the Chivas penalty box and fired an attempt which Thornton caught.
Chivas USA iced the game in second half stoppage time when Michael Lahoud stayed onside from a Gerson Mayen long ball and centered it to a wide-open Lillingston, who knocked it into the empty net.
New York was missing the services of forward Juan Pablo Angel (concussion), midfielder Jorge Rojas (right calf strain) and forward Macoumba Kandji (right hamstring strain) due to injury. Midfielder Sinisa Ubiparipovic was suspended for Saturday's match after earning a red card in the team's last match. Midfielder Albert Celades left the game in the 35th minute with a right thigh contusion and was replaced by Zimmerman. Defender Carlos Johnson, who made his first appearance since May 16 after suffering a broken fifth metatarsal, was removed at halftime with a lower back contusion.
PETKE SUSPENDED: New York Red Bulls defender Mike Petke earned his fifth yellow card on Saturday in the team's 2-0 loss against Chivas USA and will be suspended for the team's next game against FC Dallas. Midfielder Sinisa Ubiparipovic was suspended for the Chivas USA match for a red card on July 25 against the Colorado Rapids and will be available for selection this weekend.
ANGEL ONE AWAY: Red Bulls forward Juan Pablo Angel, a finalist for the 2007 Major League Soccer Most Valuable Player Award, scored his team-high seventh goal in New York's 3-1 loss to the Los Angeles Galaxy on July 16. Angel is now in sole possession of second place for goals scored in regular season matches - just one goal shy of tying Giovanni Savarese's team record. He has a 0.60 goals per game average, which is tops in club history. Angel is two goals away from the record for goals scored in all competitions. He has missed the last two games due to concussion symptoms.
