Chad Marshall wins Player of the Week

Published on August 17, 2009 under Major League Soccer (MLS) News Release

Marshall scored the game-winning goal and anchored the Crew's defense to their third consecutive shutout victory over an opponent. The victory helped to extend the Crew's MLS-record home unbeaten streak to 20 games. Marshall led the voting over Toronto FC midfielder Dwayne De Rosario and Houston Dynamo goalkeeper Pat Onstad to capture the Player of the Week award.

Marshall tallied his fourth goal of the season and third headed goal from a set piece to give the Crew the lead in the 10th minute of their 2-0 win over FC Dallas. Rogers sent a right-footed corner kick towards the back post where Marshall crashed in on goal, out jumped FC Dallas defender Atiba Harris and powered a header just past the outstretched fingertips of FC Dallas goalkeeper Dario Sala.

This is the first MLS Player of the Week Award for the Riverside, Calif. product, who was selected second overall in the 2004 MLS SuperDraft. The 6-foot-4-inch defender was a key component in the Crew's 2008 MLS Cup title run, scoring the game-winning goal off a Guillermo Barros Schelotto pass in the 2008 MLS Cup. Marshall recently received his second career appearance for the U.S. Men's national team against Grenada in the opening match of the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup. For more Marshall's award click here.

The Major League Soccer Player of the Week is selected each week of the MLS regular season by a panel of journalists from The North American Soccer Reporters (NASR). The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
