CRESTWOOD, IL - The Florence Freedom got a great start from Chuck Tiffany and hit three homers as they completed the series win over the Windy City Thunderbolts with a 6-4 victory Thursday night.
Tiffany (2-1) held the Thunderbolts scoreless through six innings and allowing only two hits with four strikeouts.
The left-hander was helped out before he even had to take the ball by Ryan Basham's first inning solo home run. It was Basham's 37th career Freedom homer, tying him with Kyle Geswein for the Freedom's all-time mark.
Matt Stiffler made it 2-0 Florence with a RBI single in the second off Thunderbolt starter Ross Stout. Entering Thursday, Stout was 10-2 on the season and 7-0 at home.
The game stayed 2-0 until the top of the eighth when Erold Andrus drove a one out Stout pitch over the right field wall for his seventh home run of the season. Three batters later, Justin Pickett clubbed his third home run of the series, 21st of the season, with a man aboard to make it 5-0. That was Stout's last pitch of the game.
Stout allowed five runs in 7 2/3 innings in the loss to drop to 10-3.
Windy City made it interesting in the ninth with the Freedom up 6-1. With two men on Dan Jordan hit a three run home run off Andy Clark to cut the Freedom lead to two. But closer Jonathan Miller came on and recorded the final two outs to earn his eighth save of the season.
The 2-1 road series win was the first for the Freedom since June 30-July 2 when they did it against the Washington Wild Things. Florence is now 35-39 and continues their six game road trip in Rockford to take on the RiverHawks on Friday night at 8:05 p.m. Eastern.
