
Mets sign former RiverHawk Ellison

LOVES PARK, Ill. - Former Rockford RiverHawk Derrick Ellison is getting another chance with a major-league organization.
The New York Mets have signed Ellison off the roster of the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs of the independent Atlantic League. Ellison was 1-1 with a 1.42 ERA and four saves in 13 appearances with the Blue Crabs. He averaged more than a strikeout an inning.
It's Ellison's fourth opportunity in affiliated ball. He has previously signed with the Seattle Mariners, Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers. He began 2009 with the Brewers' Class AA Huntsville affiliate. Ellison was 2-2 with two saves and a 4.45 ERA in 19 appearances with the Stars. In his nine seasons, Ellison is 21-15 with a 3.34 ERA and 15 saves. In 296 career innings, Ellison has 291 career strikeouts.
The RiverHawks signed Ellison in 2004. Ellison was a member of Rockford's Frontier League championship team that season. He returned in 2005 and was signed that year by the Mariners.
Ellison is one of two former RiverHawks in affiliated ball. The other is Taylor Sinclair, a pitcher with the Arizona Diamondbacks' Class A South Bend affiliate.
