Lake Erie Crushers News Release
Avon, OH -The Lake Erie Crushers scratched and clawed their way to victory on Thursday night as they fought their way past the Southern Illinois Miners by the final of 4-1 at All Pro Freight Stadium. The Crushers took two out of three from the Miners in the key series involving two teams fighting for the playoffs.
The Crushers scored a pair of runs early on and then relied on their pitching staff to carry them the rest of the way. Gordon Gronkowski got the Crushers off to a quick start in the first inning with an RBI single to score Drew Saylor. Gronkowski has now driven in 67 runs on the season. After Landon Camp tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the top of the second, Tim Binkoski delivered a lead-off homer to right to put the Crushers ahead by a 2-1 score. "I was trying to stay inside the ball and shoot it up the middle," said Binkoski afterwards. "But he (starter Steven Spurgeon) left it out over the plate and I put a good swing on it and got it over the fence."
Brent Lysander struggled somewhat with his command against the Miners, walking four and striking out one in his five innings of work. But he was able to keep Southern Illinois off the board, allowing just a run on five hits as he earned his ninth win of the season. Cristobal Mata, Ronnie Morales, Shannon Sprouse, and J.J. Pacella combined to throw four scoreless innings of relief. Pacella took care of the last six hitters in a row to earn his fifth save of the season.
The offense provided Pacella with some insurance in the eighth inning as Andrew Davis hit a two-run double down the left field line, scoring Jodam Rivera and Drew Saylor. Davis has now driven in 58 runs and has 41 extra base hits.
The Crushers improve to 44-31 on the season and will now depart for a seven-day, six-game road trip starting on Friday night at Evansville against the Otters. Alberto Rolon will get the start for Lake Erie.
