Gateway Grizzlies News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI-The Traverse City Beach Bums slipped past the Gateway Grizzlies Thursday night at Wuerfel Park, taking the finale of a three-game series 2-1.
An eventful night, the game featured a protest by the Beach Bums for an improper Grizzlies' lineup card, a bench-clearing brawl and four ejections.
Beach Bums' manager Greg Langbehn protested the game in the first inning when he noticed the Grizzlies had inadvertently listed two designated hitters on the card.
In the third inning, Grizzlies starter Jamie Arneson walked Beach Bums' first baseman, and former Grizzlie, John Alonso for the second time in the game. Alonso took exception to the pass and began yelling at Arneson after reaching first base, when the two approached one another benches and bullpens cleared, resulting in the ejections of two Grizzlies' players, a Beach Bums player, and coach.
Traverse City (34-42) took the lead Thursday on Mike Victor's sixth homer of the year, leading off the second inning. It stayed 1-0 until the seventh.
Jareck West led off the inning and reached on an error. Brandon Johnson sacrificed West to second. West scored, from second, on a sacrifice fly by Alex Kerins to knot the score 1-1.
Tom Vesely (1-3) relieved Arneson in the eighth inning. Vesely gave up a run on a hit and two walks to put Traverse City in front for good 2-1. Arneson tossed seven innings allowing the run on five hits. He walked six and struck out five.
Kerins doubled with two outs in the ninth, but was left at second base when the game ended. Kerins was 1-2 with the RBI. The Grizzlies (31-43) finished with just five hits for the game, and managed just 17 for the three-game series.
The Grizzlies continue their six-game road trip with a three-game series at Kalamazoo beginning Friday night. First pitch against the Kings is 6:05 pm central time.
