Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - The Traverse City Beach Bums capped a wild night by scoring the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning to knock off the Gateway Grizzlies 2-1 in the rubber game of the series on Throwback Night at Wuerfel Park.
The game started on an interesting note in the first inning as Beach Bums Manager Gregg Langbehn filed a protest when noticing that Gateway had a pair of designated hitters listed on their lineup card.
Mike Victor put the Beach Bums on the board in the bottom of the second. Victor led off the inning by parking an 0-1 offering from Gateway starter Jamie Arneson over the leftfield wall, just out of the reach of Brandon Peters.
Jason Kiley was cruising along for Traverse City on the hill retiring seven in a row on more than one occasion. The bottom of the fifth inning featured four ejections and a bench clearing incident that was triggered following a walk to John Alonso.
Gateway knotted the score in the seventh as Jareck West reached on an error to begin the inning. He was sacrificed from second and scored from second by tagging up on a deep flyball to center.
The Beach Bums gave Kiley the win by scoring in the eighth. Andrew Barbaro drew a one out walk from Gateway reliever Tom Vesely and was replaced at first by Mike Victor following a fielder's choice. Brian Lapin drove a 2-0 the opposite way down the line in right to score Victor from first.
Kiley threw eight innings for the Beach Bums and allowed just four hits and an unearned run to go with a walk and six strikeouts. David Hurst threw the ninth to pick up his fourth save, leaving the tying run at second base. Traverse City mustered only six hits in the game, but Mike Victor posted two driving in a run and scoring the winning run. Robby Alcombrack also posted two hits on the night.
Traverse City will open a series with the River City Rascals tomorrow evening on a FANtastic Fireworks Friday. RHP Kevin Reese (7-5, 4.63) will take to the hill for the Beach Bums with Daniel Howard (4-5, 5.62) slated to go for the Rascals. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
