
Wild Things Fall to Riverhawks

Loves Park, Ill.- The Washington Wild Things (35-40), presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, fell to the Rockford RiverHawks (37-37) 9-6 on Thursday night.
The RiverHawks took the lead early and never relinquished it. Robert Sabates started the scoring with a three-run homerun in the bottom of the first. Jason James added to Rockford's lead with a solo homer in the second to make the score 4-0.
The Wild Things cut the lead in half in the fifth inning, when Alan Robbins scored on a wild pitch and Chris Raniere scored on a triple by Chris Sidick. But the RiverHawks matched the pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Sabates doubled to drive in a run. James followed with an RBI single.
Rockford added two more in the sixth after starting pitcher Chris Ingoglia left the game with one out and two runners on. Reliever Rob Hedrick gave up two singles, allowing Ingoglia's base runners to score.
The Wild Things got on the board again in the seventh inning when Brett Grandstrand hit a solo homerun. However, once again the RiverHawks matched Washington's scoring with a run in the bottom of the seventh.
Washington added two more in the top of the eighth. Jacob Dempsey hit a lead off homerun, and Raniere drove in Ryan Groth with an RBI single. Dempsey hit another solo homerun in the ninth, tying the franchise record with his 24th homer of the season.
James and Sabates led Rockford offensively, going 4-for-5 and 3-for-5 respectively. For the Wild Things, Michael Parker went 3-for-5 at the plate with three singles to keep his 13-game hitting streak alive.
Fabian Gomez earned the win for Rockford, pitching six innings and allowing two runs on five hits, six strikeouts, two walks and one hit batsman. In his first start as a Wild Thing, Ingoglia took the loss. He threw 5.1 innings and gave up eight runs on nine hits, eight runs, three strikeouts, three walks and one hit batsman.
Despite the loss, the Wild Things won the three-game series against Rockford two games to one.
The Wild Things travel to Windy City for a three-game series against the Thunderbolts beginning Friday night at 8:05 p.m. EDT. Pre-game coverage starts at 7:55 p.m. on WJPA 95.3 FM.
