Red Deer, AB - The Red Deer Rebels scored three unanswered second period goals to beat the Calgary Hitmen 3-2 Friday night at the Enmax Centrium.
Riley Sheen led the way with a goal and an assist helping the Rebels win their fifth in a row. Presten Kopeck, and Brett Cote also struck for Red Deer who moves to within a point of Calgary and Medicine Hat for first place in the Central Division. Both the Hitmen and Tigers have 85 points with five games remaining in their regular season schedule while the Rebels at 84 points have four games left.
Travis Sanheim and Ben Thomas provided the Hitmen goals giving Calgary a 2-0 first period lead.
The Hitmen outshot Red Deer 30-19 but goalie Rylan Toth made 28 saves in a second star performance.
Special teams also played a major factor with the Rebels going 2-5 on the powerplay and killing all three Hitmen chances.
Calgary will wrap up their franchise record long 11 game road trip tomorrow (Saturday, March 14) in Lethbridge against the Hurricanes in the start of a home-and-home series.
The return match goes Sunday in Calgary in what will be the first Hitmen home game in 26 days. Game time is 4:00 p.m. for Sunday Funday, presented by Booster Juice and McKnight 24 Hour Veterinary. Take part in the carnival on the concourse, featuring face painters, balloon artists and a photo booth. Bring your skates and helmet for a post-game family skate. All participants 18 and under must wear a helmet.
