Winterhawks Fall 5-3 in Spokane Friday

The Portland Winterhawks (40-21-2-3) fell 5-3 Friday in Spokane against the Chiefs (33-29-3-1).

Spokane got off to a 2-0 lead with goals in the first 6:30 of the game from Adam Helewka and Riley Whittingham. The Chiefs added a shorthanded goal from Kailer Yamamoto at 15:31 as they took a 3-0 lead into the second.

Portland got on the board 9:43 into the second when defenseman Anton Cederholm scored on a shot from the point to get the Hawks within two at 3-1. Then with just 13.5 seconds to go in the period Oliver Bjorkstrand stepped into one and fired a blast from the slot past Chiefs goaltender Garret Hughson to get Portland within one, 3-2, heading into the third. It was Bjorkstrand's 55th goal and 100th point of the season.

The Hawks then tied the game when Chase De Leo scored 5:29 into the third off a rebound to even the game at 3-3. Spokane regained a lead when Whittingham scored his second of the game at 9:39 on a power play for a 4-3 advantage. They added an empty net goal from Dominic Zwerger with eight seconds to go to seal a 5-3 win.

The Hawks are back in action tomorrow when they host the Prince George Cougars at 7 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
