Rapid City Rush News Release
(Prescott Valley, AZ) - On Wednesday night, the Rush continued their road dominance with a 6-5 overtime victory over the Arizona Sundogs. Les Reaney scored a powerplay goal just 1:12 into overtime to lift Rapid City to their fourth overtime win of the season, and second against the Sundogs. With the win, Rapid City gains sole possession of first place in the Northern Conference.
The Rush didn't get the start they wanted as the Sundogs came shooting out of the gate to take a two-goal lead less than six minutes in. With an early powerplay chance, Chad Hinz centered a puck to Marc Belanger who sent a one-timer past Battochio at the 3:17 mark. Just over two minutes later, the Sundogs would strike again, this time an even strength goal from Steve Potvin that doubled the lead. It would take over ten minutes, but Rapid City would finally get on the board at the 16:15 mark When Scott Wray deflected a Riley Weselowski past Groenestege to cut the lead in half. With the assist, Weselowski picked up his first point in a Rush uniform.
In the second period, Rich Hansen set up Blaine Jarvis for his 9th of the year to tie the score at 2-2. With the goal, Jarvis surpassed his rookie season total of eight. Just 55 seconds later though, the Sundogs would strike back on a snap shot from Jason Visser that regained the lead for the home squad. With just 1:14 left in the second, the Rush got a huge boost as Scott Wray knotted the game on another deflection.
In the final frame, Rapid City would gain their first lead of the game with a tally from Luke Erickson at the 4:05 mark. Jarvis knocked down an outlet pass and found Erickson who sent home his own rebound for his 15th of the season. Later, the Rush would double their lead after Brendan Cook found Jamie Vander Veeken fresh out of the penalty box for a breakaway chance. VanderVeeken broke in and slid a puck five-hole that just crossed the goal line. One minute after the tally, the Sundogs would cut the lead in half as Linus Fagemo's wrap-around squeaked in to make it 5-4. Looking for the game-tying goal on the powerplay late in the game, the Sundogs pulled Groenestege for the 2-man advantage. The Rush were then assessed another penalty, making it a rare 6-on-3 advantage, where Belanger took advantage, sending the game to overtime.
In the overtime period, the Rush were awarded a one minute powerplay, and Les Reaney would answer the call on the 4-on-3. Brendon Hodge slid the puck to Reaney at the left circle who blasted a shot through a screen for the 6-5 victory.
The Rush are now a perfect 4-0 in games decided in overtime, moving to 29-10-3 and sole possession of first place in the Northern Conference. Danny Battochio made 30 saves and earned his 18th win of the season.
The Rush continue their road trip with Friday evening tilt against the Arizona Sundogs on at 7:05pm MST. Tune into the broadcast on 100.3 the FOX or streaming online at www.foxradio.com.
