Charleston RiverDogs News Release

ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- The Charleston RiverDogs plated a run in the top of the first but failed to score again, as they lost to the Asheville Tourists 4-1 Thursday night at McCormick Field.

Austin Aune and Chris Breen set the table with back-to-back one-out singles in the first inning. Isaias Tejeda followed with a single of his own to bring home Aune and put the RiverDogs on top 1-0 early.

Matt Wotherspoon pitched a career-high seven innings and only allowed one run in the fourth. Omar Carrizales drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on consecutive singles by Shane Hoelscher and Drew Weeks.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the eighth. Connor Kendrick (1-1) entered the game in relief of Wotherspoon and allowed three runs on two hits. Only one of the three runs was earned because the RiverDogs made two errors in the inning.

Marcos Derkes led off with a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored the go-ahead run on an RBI double by Carrizales. Luis Jean laid down a sacrifice bunt, but Ryan Lindemuth threw the ball away, allowing Carrizales to score and Jean to move to second. Jean took third on another wild pitch by Kendrick and scored on an error by the catcher Collin Slaybaugh to make it 4-1.

Asheville's bullpen only allowed one hit over four scoreless innings after the starter Carlos Polanco tossed the first five. Blake Shouse (3-0) pitched the eighth inning and picked up his third win of the season. Josh Michalec retired the RiverDogs in order in the top of the ninth and earned his league-leading 17th save and second in a row.

For the second straight game, the RiverDogs got on the board first with an early run but failed to score again. Charleston will attempt to split the four-game series with Asheville as the RiverDogs wrap up their nine-game road trip, Friday night at McCormick Field.
