Power Rides Tarpley to 5-1 Win

(Kannapolis, NC- July 2, 2015)- On Thursday night, the West Virginia Power beat the Kannapolis Intimidators 5-1 at Intimidators Stadium. Stephen Tarpley pitched seven innings of one-run ball and improved to 4-0 on the road this season.

Jerrick Suiter reached on a ground rule double to lead off the second inning and scored on a single by Elvis Escobar off Kannapolis starter Thad Lowry. A Michael Suchy sacrifice fly plated Cole Tucker in the third before West Virginia added an additional run in the fourth when Suiter doubled and scored on a Taylor Gushue single against a drawn-in infield for a 3-0 lead.

Tarpley made his eighth start of the season for the Power and did not allow a base runner until a walk with one out in the third. The left-hander worked four and a third hitless innings before allowing a single to Nick Basto. The Intimidators broke up the shutout bid in the bottom of the sixth with one run on two hits.

In the top of the eighth, Suchy hit a 3-2 pitch from reliever Matt Cooper over the left field wall with Connor Joe on first to extend the Power lead to 5-1. It was Suchy's second home run in the series and sixth this season. The Power outfielder has five hits in 11 at bats in the series with seven runs batted in.

Tarpley (4-2) pitched seven innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out five and walking two. Lowry (8-4) allowed three runs on seven hits over seven innings. Suchy went 2-3 with three runs batted in to lead the Power while Suiter went three for three with a walk and two runs scored.

The Power and Intimidators close this four-game series on Friday night at 7:05 pm with Alex McRae facing Luis Martinez. West Virginia is on the road through Friday and return to Appalachian Power Park on Saturday, July 4, when they host the Delmarva Shorebirds.
