Asheville Tourists News Release

ASHEVILLE, NC-- The Asheville Tourists and the Charleston RiverDogs took a tie ball-game into the bottom of the eighth on Thursday night. Neither team had much offensive success in the first seven innings; however, the Tourists managed to break through. The three-run rally paved the way for a 4-1 win.

Carlos Polanco, the reigning South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week, took the mound for the Tourists and had to work out of some early trouble. The RiverDogs strung together three consecutive singles in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. In the top of the second, Charleston loaded the bases but Polanco escaped unscathed. Asheville's starting pitcher worked around lead-off doubles in the third and fifth innings but his pitch-count forced him out of the game after five.

The Tourists knotted up the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth. Charleston's starting pitcher, Matt Wotherspoon, retired the first nine batters he faced before Omar Carrizales worked a lead-off walk in the fourth inning. After a successful sacrifice bunt, Shane Hoelscher singled to put runners at first and third. Drew Weeks followed with an RBI single to center.

The score remained tied until the eighth in large part to Asheville's bullpen. John Sheehan, Jerry Vasto, and Blake Shouse all worked scoreless innings without facing any troublesome situations. In the bottom of the eighth, Marcos Derkes and Carrizales hit back-to-back doubles to make it 2-1. Carrizales then scored on a bunt single by Luis Jean with the help of a throwing error. Jean took third on a wild pitch and raced home on a second RiverDogs' throwing mistake.

Josh Michalec then worked a one, two, three ninth inning for his league-leading 17th save of the year. All in all Asheville's bullpen went four innings, allowed only one hit, and struck out five. Jean was the only Tourists player with two hits; in turn the infielder extended his hitting streak to a season-high 12 games.
