Hagerstown Suns News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD - One night after getting shutout for the seventh time this season, the Hagerstown Suns (4-4, 39-37) returned the favor and blanked the Greensboro Grasshoppers (1-7, 30-47) by a final of 5-0 on Thursday night. It was the seventh shutout thrown by the Suns this season, as they limited Greensboro to just two hits in the game.
LHP Connor Bach (2-1) and RHP Andrew Cooper combined to keep the Grasshoppers off the board in the game. Bach got the start and the win for the Suns, going six innings and allowing both hits and three walks while striking out eight. The eight strikeouts and the six innings pitched both matched a season-high for Bach, who has now not allowed a run over his last 11.1 innings. Cooper picked up his first save of the season by tossing the final three innings without allowing a hit, run, or walk, and striking out two. His only blemish was hitting one batter.
Offensively Hagerstown opened up the game with a four-run frame in the fifth. With two on and one out 3B Bryan Mejia stepped to the plate, and he delivered a blast over the left field wall for his first homerun of the season in just his second game with the Suns. Then, RF Dale Carey also left the yard with a shot to left, giving the Suns back-to-back homeruns for just the second time this season. Carey's solo shot was his team-leading seventh homer of the season, and wound up setting the final score.
The first Suns run crossed the plate in the first inning. Shortstop Osvaldo Abreu led off with a double to center field, his 21st of the season, which is second most in the South Atlantic League. Abreu finished the night with his first four-hit game of the season. Abreu went on to steal third following his double, and he scored from third when 1B Jose Marmolejos knocked a ground ball single up the middle to make it 1-0.
All five Hagerstown runs were charged to starting LHP Ben Holmes (2-5), who suffered the loss for Greensboro. In 5.2 innings pitched he gave up eight hits and two walks while striking out six. RHP Tyler Kane tossed 2.1 innings of scoreless relief for the Grasshoppers, surrendering one hit and one walk while striking out three.
These teams will conclude their four-game series at Municipal Stadium on Friday July 3. The Suns will send RHP Luis Reyes (3-4) to the mound for his 14th start and appearance this season. He will square off against LHP James Buckelew (3-3) for Greensboro. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm. For tickets call 301-791-6266 or go to www.hagerstownsuns.com.
