Corpus Christi IceRays News Release

The way Corpus Christi is playing they would rather 2007 not come to an end. The Rayz rode three first period goals to a 3-2 victory over the Austin Ice Bats in the 2007 calendar finale on Monday Night. The win extended the Rayz season-high winning streak to four games, and their point-streak to five games. Corpus Christi improved to 12-14-3 on the year and put the exclamation point on one of the most exciting years in Rayz history. The Rayz upped the gap between themselves and sixth place in the Southern Conference to five points. Corpus Christi will begin the 2008 segment of their season on Friday Night when they host the Colorado Eagles at 7:05pm at the American Bank Center. Tickets are on sale now and start at just $12. The Rayz took control of the game immediately with a three goal outburst in the opening frame. Kevin Watters got it started with his team-leading 12th of the year at 5:22 when he beat Miguel Beaudry through the pads on a backhand from the left circle. The Rayz then made it 2-0 on a power play when Adam Powell scored on a rebound from the bottom of the slot on a Jon Jankus rebound at 7:41. At 16:07 Niko Tuomi scored in his third straight game to make it 3-0 after a beautiful drop pass from Jay Latulippe on a Rayz power play. The Bats outshot the Rayz 10-8, but Corpus Christi took a commanding 3-0 lead into the second period. After intermission the Ice Bats pulled Beaudry for Doug Groenetege.

In the second period, the Bats tallied early to cut into the Rayz lead. At 1:15 R.G. Flath scored a rebound goal to make the score 3-1 Rayz. The Bats controlled the tempo for much of the frame, but Jason Tapp stood strong in net for the Rayz and Corpus kept their two goal lead. The Bats outshot the Rayz 16-5 in the period.

Early in the third period, Austin continued their comeback effort with a Brendan cook power play goal 1:09 into the frame. However, that's as close as the Bats would get as Tapp closed the door the rest of the way preserving the 3-2 win. The Bats outshot the Rayz 10-8

Tapp made 34 saves on 36 shots to improve to 12-12-2. Beaudry made 5 saves on 8 shots and fell to 5-13. Groenestege made 13 saves on as many shots and did not figure into the decision. The Rayz went 2-7 on the power play, and the Bats were 1-6. The Bats outshot the Rayz 36-21.

The Rayz are proud to be celebrating a decade of hockey in South Texas. Individual game tickets are currently available.
