WHO WILL CLOSE OUT 2007 WITH CHL'S TOP RECORD?
With 2007 ending tonight, we take a look back at the top teams during the 2007 calendar year. The Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs went 29-5-1 last season after the turn of the new year and are 17-73 this season giving them a combined 46-12-4 record. That puts them one win better than the Laredo Bucks who are 45-16-5 heading into tonight's game. The team that struggled the most in 2007 was the Austin Ice Bats who are 17-39-9.
Top Five Teams in 2007
1. Mudbugs (46-12-4)
2. Laredo (45-16-5)
3. Youngstown (39-20-5)
4. Colorado (39-21-5)
5. Arizona (39-23-3)
GRANDE DEFENSIVE STRUGGLES
The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees are currently on a seven-game winless streak (0-5-2) with keeping the puck out of the net being the biggest obstacle. The Bees have allowed a CHL-high 118 goals this season (4.37/game) including 39 over their last five games. Twice in their last five games, the Bees have given up 10 goals (to NMX and ARZ). The next six opponents for the Bees present challenges with Laredo, Colorado, Corpus Christi, Arizona, Bossier-Shreveport and New Mexico scheduled.
40 POINT CLUB HAS NINE MEMBERS
The CHL's scoring race has picked up heading into the new year with nine players sitting with 40 points or more. Leading the race is Arizona's Alex Leavitt who has 45 points (16-29=45) in just 22 games played. He is followed by Laredo's Jeff Bes (44 points) and teammate Tyler Redenbach (44 points) who is currently on re-call with the San Antonio Rampage of the AHL. Odessa's Dominic Leveille (43 points) and Rocky Mountain's Scott Wray (42 points) round out the top five. Also over 40 points are New Mexico's Konrad Reeder (41 points), Rocky Mountain's Brent Cullaton (41 points), Odessa's Sebastien Thinel (40 points) and Colorado's Greg Pankewicz (40 points).
MUDBUGS GOALTENDERS AT IT AGAIN
The Mudbugs have the CHL's longest active win streak at seven games and goaltending has been the big reason. Ken Carroll and Northern Conference All-Star John DeCaro are #1, #2 in the league with their 1.93 and 1.98 goals against averages. As a team, the Mudbugs allow 2.07 goals per game (second is Laredo at 2.29). Carroll is the hotter of the two winning six straight decisions allowing just seven goals over that span and turning aside 96% of the shots he has faced. DeCaro is 10-1-1 in his last 12 decisions with five shutouts over that span. In his 10 wins this season, the second-year goaltender has allowed just 10 goals.
