Rays Secure One Point in Shootout Loss to Norfolk

NORFOLK, Va. - The South Carolina Stingrays (11-9-1-1) earned one point in the standings Wednesday night, falling to the Norfolk Admirals (4-16-4-0) in a shootout 4-3 at the Norfolk Scope.

Adam Carlson starred in net for the Stingrays in the defeat, making a total of 43 saves. South Carolina goals were scored by forwards Derek DeBlois, Kelly Zajac and Dylan Margonari.

The Admirals out-chanced the Rays in the opening frame, recording a total of 20 shots on net in the first period. Neither team was able to score in the first however, and the teams stayed even as they entered the second.

DeBlois broke the ice at 1:16 of the second, scoring his third goal in just two games this season on an assist by Zajac to make it 1-0. The strike came on a 2-on-1 rush in which Zajac faked a shot and slid the puck to DeBlois for a one-timer that hit the back of the net.

Norfolk evened the score at 1-1 when Mikael Tam scored his first of the season at 6:23 of the second.

It took less than a minute for the Stingrays to regain the lead, as Zajac made it 2-1 at 7:20 of the middle period. Forward Patrick Gaul was credited with the first assist after making a great pass to set up the goal, while defenseman Max Nicastro earned the second helper.

Once again the Admirals tied up the game quickly, this time at 2-2 on a tally by Brodie Dupont at 8:00 of period number two.

Margonari's marker that came at 10:34 put South Carolina ahead for the third time in the period, with assists from Steven McParland and Rob Flick. The forward's fifth tally of the season came when he got his own rebound in front of the net after an initial shot was saved by Norfolk goaltender Brandon Anderson.

Anderson finished with 25 saves to record a win in his first game with the Admirals.

The Stingrays held on to the 3-2 lead until the final minutes of regulation, but couldn't keep Norfolk off the board. Forward T.J. Foster scored the team's third equalizer of the game at 15:18 of the third to force overtime.

South Carolina caught a break with 1:06 remaining in the third when Norfolk's Josh Brittain went to the box for high-sticking. The penalty gave the Stingrays a man-advantage during the final minute of regulation and the opening seconds of overtime, but South Carolina was unable to convert. The opportunity was the only power play the Rays earned in the contest.

Of the six shooters to take a chance in the shootout, Dupont was the lone skater to score and the Admirals took the skills competition 1-0. Stingray shooters included DeBlois, Tim McGauley and Domenic Monardo.

South Carolina held the Admirals off the board with the man-advantage as Norfolk finished the game 0-for-4 on the power play.

The two teams will meet up again in Norfolk for their second game of the week on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Stingrays finish the week by facing the Admirals on Saturday night at 7:15 p.m. before returning to North Charleston to take on Greenville Tuesday.
