Rays Finish Busy Week 2-1-1

South Carolina Stingrays News Release


South Carolina took advantage of two road wins to even their overall record at 12-12-7 on the season and move into a tie for fourth place in the South Division of the ECHL.

Craig Olynick registered a point in each game this week for the Rays scoring three goals and adding an assist. Evan Schwabe continued his strong play for the South Carolina this week, the rookie now has 13 points on four goals and nine assists in 20 games.

South Carolina's power play continues to be one of the most potent units in the league. The Rays have a power play which clicks at 20.3% and is ranked seventh in the ECHL. The Stingrays penalty kill has now struck for six short handed goals including Trevor Johnson's game winner on Sunday in Greenville.

The Stingrays finished the month of December with a record of 7-3-2. South Carolina is 0-7 in games that advance past regulation. The Rays are now 7-6-4 at home and 5-6-3 on the road.

Tuesday, December 27th

Stingrays 3 @ Gwinnett 7

The Gwinnett Gladiators exploded for seven goals including three power play tallies and a short handed goal in a 7-3 victory over the South Carolina Stingrays in at the Arena at Gwinnett Center. The Gladiators broke a 3-3 tie with four third period goals as Derek Nesbitt and Brad Schell each had a pair of goals in a game that improved the Gladiators to 15-6-4 and dropped the Rays to 10-12-6.

The Rays led three separate times in the game but the high powered Gladiator offense finally took over in the final stanza scoring the games final five goals.

Friday, December 30th

Stingrays 4 @ Augusta 1

Four different South Carolina Stingrays scored in a 4-1 win over the Augusta Lynx at the Augusta Richmond County Civic Center.

The Stingrays jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the first period on goals by Ty Morris and Scott Corbett. Morris scored under two minutes into the game at 1:56 when Cail MacLean found him on the back door for this fourth of the night. Scott Corbett tipped an Evan Schwabe pass over the shoulder of Jason Wolfe for the game winner also in the first.

Saturday, December 31st

Stingrays 4 Vs Augusta 5 SO

The Augusta Lynx overcame a three goal deficit to put the Stingrays away in front of 5,657 fans at the North Charleston Coliseum. Ryan Lang's goal in the seventh round of a shoot out gave the Lynx a 5-4 victory. The loss marked the seventh time that the Stingrays have lost this season in games that have gone beyond regulation seven tries.

Sunday, January 1st

Stingrays 2 @ Greenville 1

Davis Parley made 30 saves for the South Carolina Stingrays as the visiting Rays upended the Greenville Grrrowl 2-1 in front of 3,368 at the Bilo Center. Parley worked a shut out late into the hockey game and earned his second win with the Rays.

The win was the fourth straight for South Carolina against the Grrrowl snapping a three game winning streak for Greenville. Trevor Johnson's first period short handed goal proved to be the game winner as the Rays improved to 12-12-7 and earned a share of fourth place with Greenville (15-10-1)

Daigneault Spends The Weekend in Washington

Stingrays Goaltender Maxime Daigneault was called up to the Washington Capitals on Friday. Daigneault did not see any action in two games with Washington. He was sent back to the Stingrays on Sunday night.

The Skinny: The Stingrays have won four straight games against the Grrrowl. The two teams are currently tied for fourth place. The Rays are now 4-0-1 on the season.

The Skinny: The Stingrays have a record of 2-2-2 this season against the Lynx. Augusta is currently in seventh place in the Division with a record of 13-17-2.

Legue Named ECHL All Star

The ECHL announced this week that rookie Jeff Legue will represent the Stingrays at the 2006 ECHL All Star Game in Fresno, CA on January 25th. Legue leads the Stingrays in goals this season with 11.

The rookie has been out for the last two weeks with an ankle injury, But is expected back in the lineup within the next two weeks. He is currently fourth on the team in overall scoring with 18 points in 25 games.

Legue (luh-GWEE) is a Cornwall, Ontario product. At 5'11" and 170lbs, Legue had 44 points in 37 games on 24 goals and 20 assists a year ago at Ferris State. He scored an impressive 67 goals in his four year career with the Bulldogs.

"Jeff has the ability to put the puck in the net," added Fitzsimmons. "He is exactly what this All Star Game is all about, a solid prospect with a bright future in the game."
