San Antonio Rampage News Release
SAN ANTONIO (Feb. 6, 2013) - The San Antonio Rampage Sled Hockey Team, home to three members of Team USA's Paralympic sled hockey squad, will host their fifth annual sled hockey tournament this weekend at Northwoods Ice and Golf Center.
The Rampage sled hockey team is a member of the Midwest Sled Hockey League and will host the three other teams in their league: the Colorado Avalanche Sled Hockey Team, DASA St. Louis Blues, and the RIC Chicago Blackhawks.
The puck drops at 6:15 p.m. on Friday, with a contest between the Blackhawks and the Avalanche to open up the three-day, eight-game tournament. The Rampage will take the ice at 7:45 p.m. on Friday night, facing off against the Blues for their first game. Admission to all games is free to the public. Below is a full schedule for the tournament.
Prior to Saturday's game between the Rampage and the Avalanche at 6:00 p.m., the Rampage will host a Military Appreciation Ceremony as part of the opening ceremony. The Rampage (AHL) will host their 11th annual Military Appreciation Night, sponsored by Champion A.C., on Saturday, March 1 at 7:00 p.m. at AT&T Center when they host the Texas Stars for their first home game coming off of the Rodeo Road Trip.
The San Antonio Rampage Sled Hockey Team features three U.S. National Sled Hockey Team members in Rico Roman, Josh Sweeney, and Jen Yung Lee. The U.S. National Sled Hockey Team won gold at the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games, as well as at the 2012 World Ice Sledge Hockey Championship in Hamar, Norway. They captured gold once again at the 2012 World Sledge Hockey Challenge in Calgary, Alta., and medaled at the most recent World Sledge Hockey Challenge, held Dec. 1-3, 2013 in Toronto, coming home with silver. Yung Lee led all goaltenders in the tournament with a 0.900 goals-against and was third in save percentage with .875.
All three will represent Team USA at this year's Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia from March 8-15, 2014.
The Rampage currently sit tied for second place in the Midwest League, just a point back from the first-place Blues. They took the divisional title in 2011 and 2012.
The San Antonio Rampage Sled Hockey Team was the first team to form that consists of all wounded military service members. The team is run by Operation Comfort, a nonprofit organization that works with wounded Service Members coming from Iraq and Afghanistan who are recovering at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) in San Antonio, Texas.
The Rampage Sled Hockey Team was formed in January 2007 and was adopted by the San Antonio Rampage shortly thereafter. The Rampage (AHL) continues to host various fundraising events, including their annual Military Appreciation Night on March 1, to raise money to support the Rampage Sled Hockey Team. The sled hockey team started with seven players and has quickly gained popularity in which the team now consists of more than 20 players. The team began playing in tournaments in 2008 and has since traveled throughout the United States.
