DES MOINES - The San Antonio Rampage scored two unanswered goals to defeat the Iowa Wild 2-1 in front of 3,964 at Wells Fargo Arena on Monday night. Colin Smith recorded the game winning-goal and five shots, earning him the First Star of the Game and helping the Rampage seal their second straight victory before heading into the Christmas break.
Iowa started the scoring with six seconds remaining in the first stanza. The Rampage committed a turnover in their own zone allowing Kurtis Gabriel a lane for an unassisted goal.
The Rampage fought back in the second period, and Dennis Everberg scored the equalizer, punching in a rebound in front of the net to knot the game at one. The tally was Everberg's sixth of the season, and the teams headed into the second intermission tied at one.
San Antonio went ahead at the 2:16 mark of the final stanza. Mikko Rantanen forced a Wild turnover in their own zone and looped around the back of the net, feeding a streaking Smith for the shorthanded goal. The marker stood as the game-winning goal, and the Rampage sealed their second consecutive win.
The Silver and Black finished 0-for-2 on the power play while also holding the Wild scoreless on their two chances with the man advantage.
Key Stat
Calvin Pickard recorded 26 saves on 27 shots, earning the Second Star of the Game.
With the primary assist on Smith's goal, Mikko Rantanen is now tied for second among AHL rookies in scoring with 26 points and tied for third in assists with 16.
Lineup Notes
Coach Dean Chynoweth mixed up the Rampage lines in tonight's win.
