Rampage Rally But Fall to Barons 6-5

OKLAHOMA CITY (Mar. 2, 2014) - The San Antonio Rampage (24-24-3-5) tallied five unanswered goals, but were tripped up by two late tallies as they fell 6-5 to the Oklahoma City Barons (26-24-1-6) inside the Cox Convention Center on Sunday.

Garrett Wilson, Colby Robak, Ryan Martindale, Vince Trocheck, and Quinton Howden all tallied for the Rampage in the loss, with both Howden (1g-1a) and Greg Rallo (2a) recording two-point nights.

Michael Houser made 25-of-31 saves in the defeat.

The Barons shot out to a commanding 3-0 lead by the 10:40 mark of the first period, on goals from Roman Horak, Mark Arcobello, and Will Acton.

But just 24 seconds after Acton's marker, Wilson crashed the net, deflecting a Bobby Butler shot past Oklahoma City netminder Tyler Bunz to get the Rampage on the board at 11:04 of the first.

The two teams would trade chances and penalties, but despite the Rampage outshooting them 19-9, the Barons took their lead into the first intermission.

If the first period was all about the Barons, then the second was all about the Rampage. At the 7:08 mark of the middle frame, Robak was the trailer on the play, and pounced on a rebound to slip it just past Bunz, bringing the Rampage within one on his seventh of the year.

Quinton Howden earned the solo assist on Robak's tally, with his shot being the initial save made by Bunz.

With just 14.7 seconds left on the clock, a big scrum opened up in front of the Barons' net. Several Rampage players made attempts at stuffing the puck past Bunz, but it was former Baron Martindale who finally got the puck across the line to knot the game at three heading into the third.

Jed Ortmeyer and Rallo recorded the assists on Martindale's sixth of the year.

The Rampage pulled ahead 5-3 in the third, starting the climb just 2:24 into the final frame. Trocheck found a lane and went crossbar and down to make it 4-3 for the Rampage, and just 1:12 later, Howden buried a Rallo rebound as the captain battled along the half boards to get the puck on net.

The goal, Howden's 10th of the year, made it 5-3 and was the fifth unanswered goal scored by the Rampage.

But two goals just 26 seconds apart - one each for Travis Ewanyk and Brandon Davidson - tied it up at five with under nine minutes remaining in the third. It was Davidson again with 32.5 seconds left, icing it 6-5 for the Barons as they surged to their third straight win.

The Rampage outshot the Barons 36-31, and both teams went 1-for-4 on the power play.
