Josh Rainwater and Angel Castro combined to toss a five-hit shutout against the Reading Phillies on Saturday night at Jerry Uht Park in a 9-0 SeaWolves win. Erie is now 5-0 against the Phils at "The Uht."
Rainwater got into trouble in the first three innings, but stood tall getting out of a bases loaded, one-out jam in the second and stranding runners in scoring position in the first and third innings.
The âWolves broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth against Reading starter Edgar Garcia. Wilkin Ramirez led off the inning with a walk, got to second on a Jeff Frazier groundout and stole third for his 20th steal of the season. Casper Wells followed with an RBI double to make it a 1-0 game in favor of the âWolves.
With a one-run lead, Rainwater would face one batter over the minimum over the final four innings he pitched and left after seven with a one-run lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, the âWolves would strike big against Garcia in his final inning of work. Ryan Roberson led off with a single. Deik Scram followed with a double to right-center, scoring Roberson for a 2-0 lead. Santo De Leon then doubled down the right field line, scoring Scram, putting Erie ahead 3-0. De Leon finished the game 2-for-4, extending his hitting streak to 10 straight games. Shawn Roof laid down a sacrifice bunt moving De Leon over to third. With the Reading infield drawn in, Will Rhymes connected on an infield single off the glove of a diving second baseman Tony Mansolino that trickled into center, allowing De Leon to score for a 4-0 lead. James Skelton followed with his first Double-A hit putting runners on the corners for Ramirez who singled home Rhymes for a 5-0 Erie lead.
In the bottom of the eighth, the âWolves would put the game out of reach against reliever Pat Overholt. Roberson led off and reached on an error, Scram walked and De Leon reached on the second Reading error of the inning to load the bases for Rhymes. Rhymes drew a bases loaded walk, scoring Roberson for a 6-0 lead. Skelton then grounded out to second, scoring Scram to put Erie ahead 7-0. Ramirez capped off the Erie scoring night when he singled home De Leon and Rhymes for a 9-0 lead.
The R-Phils managed just five hits in the game and none after the seventh inning as Rainwater (8-5) became Erie's first eight-game winner. He walked four and struck out five in the game. Castro tossed a perfect eighth and ninth innings to close out the win.
