Aerodynamics...

Missed Opportunities...The great thing about a baseball game is there's always a chance you'll see something you've never seen before. The bad thing is that the event in question might be a pitching staff allowing nine walks, yet not seeing a single one of those runners cross home plate. Unfortunately for the Aeros, that was exactly the rare occurrence that took place at Canal Park last night, as Harrisburg pitching survived nine walks and out-lasted Akron 3-1 in 10 innings. Senators starter Adrian Alaniz was the most visible offender, allowing six walks in five shaky yet scoreless frames. The right-hander issued consecutive one-out walks in the third but escaped unharmed, and then got a key double play from CF Jose Constanza to snuff out a rally in the fourth after a triple and two more walks had loaded the bases with one away. Aeros 1B Stephen Head tied the game with a solo home run in the eighth, and reliever Adam Carr promptly walked the next two hitters only to recover and strike out C Damaso Espino to end the inning. All told, Akron left 10 runners on base (five in scoring position), and stranded seven runners (four in scoring position) in the first four innings against Alaniz.

Rocky Return...In a roster move that wasn't finalized until just before last night's first pitch, the Aeros welcomed All-Star closer Randy Newsom back from Class AAA Buffalo. Newsom, who still ranks third in the Eastern League with 24 saves despite spending all of July with the Bisons, was greeted rudely in his return however, allowing the two winning runs in the top of the 10th (although both runners were the responsibility of LHP Chuck Lofgren). With one on and one out, the Aeros intentionally walked pinch-hitter Edgardo Baez with first base open to set the stage for Newsom. Harrisburg countered by bringing veteran infielder Marcos Yepez off the bench, and the switch-hitter ripped Newsom's first offering into right-center field for a two-run double and the winning margin.

The Plot Grows Thicker...Akron's loss combined with Bowie's blowout win at Altoona means just 2.5 games separate the Aeros and Baysox entering tonight's play. Bowie has shaved five games off Akron's lead in less than three weeks, despite the lack of any head-to-head match-ups with the Aeros. Akron held a season-high 7.5 game lead over Bowie following a win in Reading July 12, but since then the Aeros have gone 7-12 while the Baysox have gone 12-7.

Hot Homestand...No player on the Akron roster has enjoyed this lengthy homestand more than 1B Stephen Head, who with last night's home run is hitting .344 (11-32) with four doubles, two homers, six runs scored and four RBI in eight games. DH Matt Whitney is also seeing the ball well, hitting .412 (7-17) with two doubles, a triple, and a home run in his last five games.

Roster Move...To make room for Newsom on the active roster yesterday, the Indians released RHP Jim Deters.
