
Trenton takes first game of DH over Portland 7-3

(Portland, ME)- Trenton scored the first seven runs en route to a 7-3 victory over the Portland Sea Dogs in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday night from Hadlock Field in Portland, ME. The second game of the doubleheader was postponed because of rain. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon between the Thunder and the Sea Dogs.
Trenton jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Third baseman Chris Malec had a sacrifice fly RBI to give the Thunder the lead. Trenton (68-44) extended the lead to 3-0 in the third inning. Center fielder Austin Jackson had an RBI double off of Portland starting pitcher Kyle Jackson (5-3), and Left fielder Colin Curtis connected on an RBI single. The lead swelled to 5-0 in the fourth inning. Second baseman Reegie Corona had an RBI single, and Jackson drove home his second run of the game with a sacrifice fly RBI. Trenton capped off its offensive explosion with two runs in the fifth inning. Catcher Joe Muich had a sacrifice fly RBI and Right fielder James Cooper had an RBI single. Cooper extended his hitting streak to 10 games with the single.
Trenton starting pitcher Michael Gardner went three plus scoreless innings and only allowed one run. Thunder reliever Anthony Clagget (3-2) earned the win in relief by going three innings. Jackson gave up seven hits and seven earned runs in 4 2/3 innings to take the loss. He also walked a season-high six. Portland notched two runs in the sixth inning off of Claggett on an RBI double by First baseman Aaron Bates, and an RBI single by Shortstop Argenis Dias. Thunder reliever Wilkins Arias pitched in back-to-back games as he came on in the seventh. He gave up one run, but recorded the final three outs to preserve the win. Every Thunder player had a hit in the win, with the exception of First baseman Cody Ehlers.
Trenton and Portland will play a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. The first game is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. Tomorrow is the final day that Trenton and Portland will face each other during the regular season. RHP Eric Hacker (5-2, 2.80) will start the first game for Trenton against Portland LHP Dustin Richardson (6-6, 6.23). In the second game, RHP Jhonny Nunez (0-0, 0.00) will make his Thunder debut against Portland LHP Daniel Haigwood (2-2, 3.46).
