Mills earns first EL win & Harang records first EL save in 2-1 win over Connecticut
August 2, 2008 - Eastern League (EL1)
New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Manchester, NH- Brad Mills pitched one-run baseball over six innings to notch his first career Double-A win, and Daryl Harang retired all five batters he faced for his first career Double-A save as the New Hampshire Fisher Cats beat the Connecticut Defenders, 2-1, before a crowd of 6,202 on Saturday night at Merchantsauto.com Stadium.
Connecticut (55-56) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when Ryan Rohlinger (1-for-3, HR, RBI) lifted a lead-off home run, his fifth, off Mills.
Erik Kratz (1-for-3, HR, RBI) tied the game, 1-1, with his fifth home run of the year, a line shot off Joey Martinez that cleared the wall in right with one out in the bottom of the third inning.
New Hampshire (48-66) went ahead to stay, 2-1, in the bottom of the fifth inning when Ryan Klosterman (1-for-3, RBI) smacked a two-out, run-scoring single, scoring Kyle Phillips (1-for-3, R), who singled, moved to second a wild pitch and advanced to third on a Kratz fly out.
That was enough for Mills (1-0), who held the Defenders to one run on three hits in six innings in only his second Eastern League start. The left-hander struck out five.
Making his Fisher Cats' debut, right-hander Jason Burch induced a bases-loaded double-play ground out from Rohlinger as part of his 1.1 scoreless innings of relief to preserve the lead.
Harang, making his Eastern League high 46th appearance, closed it out for his first save in five opportunities. It was the first time the Fisher Cats won a game this season when scoring two or fewer runs.
Martinez (7-9) suffered the tough-luck loss. The right-hander matched a season high by going seven innings. He scattered five hits, fanned eight and walked one.
The Fisher Cats and the Defenders meet for the final time this season Sunday afternoon at 1:05pm. New Hampshire goes for the three-game sweep with right-handed pitcher Brandon Magee (4-11, 4.99) squaring off against Connecticut right-hander Garrett Broshuis (12-6, 3.50). Radio coverage begins at 12:45pm on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Bob Lipman and Mike Murphy.
Sunday is "Splash Day" at Merchantsauto.com Stadium. The first 1,000 children in attendance for the 1:05pm game will receive FREE U.S. Cellular Gustavo Chacin Youth Jerseys. For tickets, visit www.nhfishercats.com.
