August 2, 2008 - Eastern League (EL1)
Akron RubberDucks News Release
AKRON, OH - Aeros starter Ryan Edell was terrific in seven innings of work and the offense notched an early lead in a 4-1 win over Harrisburg before 5,522 fans at Canal Park Saturday night. The Aeros improved to 68-46, and the Senators fell to 62-51, 5.5 games behind Akron for first place.
The Aeros picked up the first run of the game without the help of a hit in the first inning, as Senators starter Justin Jones hit Jose Constanza to start the game. Constanza then stole second and Josh Rodriguez walked, putting runners on first and second with no outs. Constanza proceeded to steal third and Wes Hodges drove him home with a sacrifice fly to right field to make it 1-0.
Harrisburg tied the game in the top of the third with a two-out solo home run into the second row of bleachers in right by nine-hole hitter Seth Bynum, but the Aeros regained the lead with another manufactured run in the bottom of the frame. Brandon Pinckney walked to lead off and Constanza moved him to second with a sacrifice bunt. Rodriguez followed with a single to put runners on the corners, and Hodges hit his second sac fly of the game to give Akron a 2-1 lead.
Akron added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth inning to make it 4-1. Stephen Head started the rally with a two-out double to left, and the Senators then intentionally passed Wyatt Toregas before unintentionally walking Ryan Goleski to load the bases. Damaso Espino then ripped a 2-2 pitch through the hole on the left side after a long battle with reliever Andrew Kown, plating two runs. Harrisburg center fielder Mike Daniel prevented another run from scoring with a spectacular diving grab of Pinckney's line drive to end the inning.
Edell (6-6) was excellent in seven innings of work, picking up the win. He allowed just one run on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts, turning in his 12th quality start of the year and seventh in his last eight appearances. Jones (2-3) took the loss after a solid seven-inning outing, during which he allowed just two runs on four hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Randy Newsom notched his 25th save and the 43rd for his career with a scoreless ninth inning. While no Aeros hitter had a multi-hit game, every starter reached base. Constanza tied the franchise record with three stolen bases on the night.
The Aeros wrap up this 10-game homestand Sunday at 2:05 p.m. against Harrisburg. Kevin Dixon (8-7, 4.13 ERA) will take the ball for the Aeros against Harrisburg's Zack Segovia (2-2, 7.08 ERA). It will be Family Pack Day at Canal Park with four tickets, four hot dogs, four bags of chips, and four fountain sodas for $48. Kids can also run the bases after the game. The game broadcast begins at 1:50 p.m. on SportsRadio 1350 AM and online at www.akronaeros.com. For more information, please call the Aeros at (330) 253-5151.
