Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

The New York Mets announced today they have purchased the contract of former Binghamton Mets infielder Daniel Murphy. Murphy is starting in leftfield tonight for the Mets at Houston. He takes the roster spot of Marlon Anderson, who was placed on the Disabled List with a hamstring injury.

In just his second full season, Murphy has been nothing short of impressive at the Double-A level. An Eastern League All-Star, Murphy is currently tied for fourth in the EL in RBI (67), fifth in doubles (26) and 10th in hitting (.308). Murphy has been able to produce at the plate while seeing time at third base, second base and first base and in leftfield.

The 23-year-old left Binghamton Friday for Triple-A New Orleans and, later that night, was 1 for 4 with two runs scored for the Zephyrs before moving up. Murphy becomes the second 2008 B-Mets player to make his Major League debut this season, joining Nick Evans, who is currently on the NY Mets' 25-man roster.

Tonight, Binghamton Mets continue their six-game road trip with a 7:05 p.m. contest against the New Britain Rock Cats. The B-Mets return home Thursday, when they open a seven-game homestand with a 7:05 game against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats.
