WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Tacoma Rainiers relied on a big inning and a strong start from James Paxton to top the Sacramento River Cats 7-5 at Raley Field on Monday night. The victory earns the Rainiers a series split in the team's finale at the River Cats.
Tacoma trailed Sacramento 1-0 before busting out a seven-run frame in the fourth inning. Outfielder Carlos Peguero tied the score with a one-out RBI single, and Robert Andino gave the Rainiers a 3-1 lead with a two-out double.
Abraham Almonte upped Tacoma's advantage to four runs with another two-run double one a-bat later, outfielder Franklin Gutierrez rounded out the inning with a two-run home run to left field - his second with the Rainiers this season.
Tacoma combined to collect ten hits at Sacramento, with the outfielder Almonte and first baseman Justin Smoak each turning in team-leading two-hit efforts. Almonte went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI, and Smoak went 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored.
Starter James Paxton (4-5) earned the win after holding the River Cats to one unearned run on four hits over 6.0 innings. The left-hander struck out five and walked two in his 14th start this season.
The Rainiers (43-29) begin the final leg of their season-high 12-game road trip when they open a four-game series at Colorado Springs at 6:05 p.m. tomorrow, June 18. Right-hander Erasmo Ramirez (2-1, 0.87) will start for Tacoma against right-hander Cory Riordan (4-1, 5.18).
