New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
NASHVILLE, Tennessee - The Zephyrs scored three runs in the eighth inning, but the rally fell short as the Sounds defeated New Orleans 5-3. The Z's four game winning streak snapped and record falls to 36-36.
The Zephyrs activated Brad Hand from the disabled list on Monday afternoon and the south-paw was scheduled to start. Hand had missed nearly a month with an oblique strain. In warm-ups he aggravated his oblique and was a late scratch. The Z's would be forced to turn to the bullpen.
Rett Varner got his second start of the season. In the third inning he allowed a lead-off hit. Zach Kroenke attempted a sacrifice bunt and Varner misplayed it into an error. Hainley Statia bunted the runners over and the first run scored on a wild pitch. Khris Davis singled scoring the second run and the Sounds grabbed a 2-0 advantage.
In the fifth against reliever James Leverton, Staita and Davis drew two out walks and Anderson De La Rosa hammered a three run home run to give the Sounds a 5-0 lead. Leverton allowed the one hit, he struck out five in two innings.
The Z's rally in the eighth inning would not be enough. New Orleans sent eight batters to the plate and Kevin Mattison doubled home a run and Nick Green drove in a pair.
The Zephyrs out-hit Nashville 7-3 in the game but the Sounds hung on to salvage a game in the series.
The starter Kroenke pitched six innings allowing three hits and earned the win. Varner took the loss for the Zephyrs. Rob Wooten pitched the ninth inning in the rain and earned his thirteenth save.
The Zephyrs were 5-4 on the trip and return home on Tuesday to open an eight game homestand.
Game Notes - The first five hits of the game for the Z's were all doubles. The Z's added Brad Hand from the disabled list and released pitcher AJ Battisto. The four game win streak matched the longest of the season.
Coming Up: The Zephyrs return home to face Oklahoma City on Tuesday night. The Z's will start LH Brian Flynn (2-6, 4.53) against Redhawks RH Brad Peacock (1-2, 4.23). RADIO: WMTI 106.1 FM "The Ticket"
