Tacoma Rainiers News Release
EL PASO, Texas. - The Tacoma Rainiers fought off rain and multiple El Paso scoring threats to beat the Chihuahuas 5-1 and extend their winning streak to a season-high five games on Wednesday night at Southwest University Park.
The Rainiers bullpen stymied El Paso scoring threats in the fourth and fifth inning by inducing double plays, and worked out of a bases-loaded, one-out threat with back-to-back strikeouts in the seventh.
Tacoma starting pitcher James Gillheeney was forced to end his night after just 2.0 innings when a rain delay struck in the middle of the third inning. The left-hander allowed one run on two hits and collected two strikeouts in his brief outing.
Following the delay, Logan Kensing, Mayckol Guaipe, J.C. Ramirez, and Tyler Olson combined to hold the Chihuahuas scoreless over the final 7.0 innings. The four bullpen arms issued just two walks and struck out seven.
Infielder D.J. Peterson, a 2013 first-round pick and current top prospect, went 2-for-4 in his Triple-A debut after being promoted from Double-A Jackson earlier in the day.
Jesus Montero went 4-for-5 with a double, a solo home run and three RBI to lead the Rainiers offense. Through the last six games, Montero is hitting .609 with seven runs, four doubles, and eight RBI.
Travis Jankowski led off the bottom of the first inning with a double and came around to score El Paso's lone run on an RBI single to center field by Will Middlebrooks.
The Rainiers scrambled for a run on a wild pitch in the second inning and Justin Ruggiano gave the visitors a to 2-1 lead with a solo home run in the third inning before the rain delay struck.
Solo runs the fifth and eighth gave the Rainiers some breathing room and Montero's solo shot in the top of the ninth put the final nail in the coffin, sealing Tacoma's fifth straight win.
The series continues with game three between the Rainiers (51-54) and the Chihuahuas (54-50) tomorrow, July 30. Tacoma is expected to start right-hander Forrest Snow (7-7, 3.61), while El Paso plans to counter with righty Brandon Morrow (0-0, 7.71). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
