Fresno Grizzlies News Release
RENO, Nevada - The day off couldn't cure Fresno's recent problem of allowing leads to slip away, as the Reno Aces (50-54) came from behind and scored nine unanswered runs to hand the Grizzlies (58-46) a 10-4 loss Wednesday night at Aces Ballpark. Reno tattooed Fresno pitching for 14 hits and made it three straight games that the Grizzlies have allowed double-digit runs to an opponent. The Grizzlies have held a lead in each of their last five losses.
The Grizzlies jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first and even led 4-1 in the second, but the offense disappeared the rest of the game while the pitching hemorrhaged runs. From the second inning on, the Fresno offense managed just three hits as they went on to lose their season-high tying fourth straight.
Things began to unravel in the bottom of the third when Brandon Drury doubled to left, Nick Evans singled him to third, and Jamie Romak drove in Drury with an RBI single to cut the Fresno lead to two. Starter Mike Hauschild regrouped to get Danny Dorn to lineout to center and even was ahead in the count on Peter O'Brien, but the Aces slugger launched the 1-2 offering over the left field wall for a go-ahead three-run homer (18). The four-run third altered the landscape of the game, with Reno adding a single run in the fifth and another four-run inning in the seventh.
Drury collected a career-high tying five hits, four of which were for extra bases. The Aces infielder was one of three to record a multiRBI game as they snapped Fresno's streak of 13 straight series opening wins. The Grizzlies, who entered tonight's game with a 21-5 record in series opener, have lost five of six and eight of their last 11.
Hauschild, who was undefeated in his last nine road starts, allowed a season-high tying six runs over 4.2 IP.
Domingo Santana began the scoring tonight with a two-run stand up double to center in the first, while Nolan Fontana drove him in two batters later with a single to center to make it 3-0 Fresno. An inning later, Andrew Aplin reached on an infield single, stole second, and scored on a single to center by Tony Kemp to push the lead back up to three at 4-1.
However, the offense failed to add runs in a few innings they had set themselves up for success. In the third, Fontana drew a two-out walk and advanced to third on a double by Tyler Heineman, but Leo Heras struck out swinging. In the seventh, Robbie Grossman reached on a one-out walk, but was part of a 5-4-3 double player when Tyler White bounced to third baseman Jamie Romak, preventing Santana an opportunity to hit with a runner on. Matt Duffy tried to lead a charge in the eighth when he extended his hitting streak to a season-high 10 games with a single through the hole at shortstop, but he was part of a 4-6-3 double play when Fontana bounced to Brandon Drury.
The two teams meet for game two of the three-game set Thursday night at 7:05 PM as Fresno right-hander Asher Wojciechowski meets a yet-to-be named Reno starter at Aces Ballpark.
