Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
NEED TO KNOW: The Albuquerque Isotopes (48-57) beat the Salt Lake Bees (41-64) 4-1 Wednesday night at Isotopes Park. Right-handed pitcher Jon Gray pitched five scoreless innings, while outfielder Tim Wheeler picked up thee RBI.
THE TURNING POINT: Albuquerque wasted no time jumping out front with a two-RBI single by Tim Wheeler in the second inning. Right-hander Jon Gray kept the Salt Lake lineup at bay for five innings, and the Isotopes added another run in the sixth on Wheeler's second RBI single. The Bees managed to scratch across a run in the top of the seventh, but infielder Trevor Story quickly answered with a monstrous solo home run in the home half of the inning.
MR. WHEELER: Outfielder Tim Wheeler picked up a pair of singles to drive in three runs Wednesday evening. He finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBI. He now has hits in five of last six games with back-to-back multi-hit performances. During that stretch, Wheeler is 7-for-20 with three runs scored, a double, a triple, three RBI and two walks.
WELCOME BACK McBRIDE: Matt McBride made his first start since being activated from the disabled list on Tuesday and promptly extended his team season-longest hitting streak to 18 games with a single in the first inning. The outfielder finished Wednesday evening 3-for-3 with three singles and a walk. Having spent 20 days on the disabled list, McBride's 18 game hitting streak began way back on June 16. During that stretch, he is batting .441 (30-for-68) with 19 runs scored, 10 doubles, three home runs and 16 RBI.
THERE'S NO GRAY AREA: Starting pitcher Jon Gray turned in a very strong five innings of work, striking out eight. He only walked a single batter and scattered three hits. His most impressive frame was the third when the right-hander worked around a leadoff triple by striking out a pair of hitters and inducing a groundout to end the inning with no damage done. Gray threw 50 of his 70 pitches for strikes.
WHAT'S THE WAIT: The Isotopes endured their sixth delay of the season Wednesday, a 1:42 weather delay to start the game. In addition to their six delays, the Topes have also been postponed eight times. In total, Albuquerque has spent nine hours and 30 minutes in delays this season. ON DECK: The Isotopes and Bees will play game three of their four-game series Thursday night at 7:05. Left- handed pitcher Rudy Owens (0-2, 3,04 ERA) is scheduled to make his first start in an Isotopes uniform, while Salt Lake is scheduled to send fellow left-hander Jo-Jo Reyes (2-2, 5.71 ERA) to the mound.
IN THE HOLE: Following this eight-game homestand, the Isotopes hit the road for a four-game swing against the Fresno Grizzlies on August 1-4. 19 of Albuquerque's next 27 games are at home.
