Tacoma Rainiers News Release
Tacoma, WA - The Tacoma Rainiers power-filled performance proved insufficient in a 17-12 loss to Portland at Cheney Stadium on Thursday.
In a game that saw the two teams blast a combined 11 home runs, the Beavers bested the Rainiers with 11 runs over the game's final five frames. The big blow came in the fifth when Portland's Dusty Ryan belted grand slam that broke up a 7-7 tie and gave the Beaver's a lead they would never relinquish.
Tacoma recorded a season-high seven home runs in the outing, besting their previous mark of five set against New Orleans on May 23. Of the Rainiers 12 runs, nine came off long balls, with six different Rainiers going deep. Mike Carp was responsible for two of those bombs en route to recording his fourth two-home run game of the season.
Outfielder Greg Halman's home run in the fourth inning marked his team-leading 30th of the season. Halman is now ranked fifth on Tacoma's single-season home run list and is the first to hit at least that many in one season since Dan Rohrmeier, who hit 33 in 1997.
Tacoma infielder Tug Hulett notched five hits with one home run in the losing effort, becoming the first Rainier to hit that mark since Adam Jones recorded a five-hit game against Salt Lake on July 17, 2007.
Tacoma reliever Edward Paredes was tagged with his first Triple-A loss on night where both pitching staffs were roughed up. The left-hander surrendered three runs on two hits over just 0.2 innings, with one walk and one strikeout.
The win went to Portland reliever Ryan Webb after the right-hander tossed a scoreless inning of work with one hit in the sixth.
The Rainiers take the field for the third game of their five-game series with the Beavers at 7pm on Friday. Getting the start for Tacoma in the outing is left-hander Ryan Feierabend (3-6, 5.47), while Portland counters with left-hander Cesar Ramos (5-6, 3.26). Tacoma hosts the final Friday Night Fireworks of the season immediately following the conclusion of the game.
