Round Rock Express News Release
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Evan MacLane, Jason Motte and Tyler Norrick combined for a three-hit shutout as the Memphis Redbirds blanked the Round Rock Express 9-0 Friday night at AutoZone Park. The Express (55-79) were shutout in consecutive games for the first time this season after falling 1-0 to the Redbirds (75-59) Thursday night. Memphis has won each of the series' first three games and leads the season series 10-4, winning all six games at AutoZone Park.
MacLane (7-7) allowed two hits and no walks with seven strikeouts over 6.0 innings. Motte worked the next two frames perfectly with one strikeout, and Norrick worked around a single and a walk for a scoreless ninth. Norrick had one strikeout, fanning Drew Locke to end the game.
Meanwhile, Round Rock pitchers were not as sharp. Starter Josh Banks (9-10) surrendered seven runs on eight hits, including one home run, and two walks with five strikeouts over 5.1 innings. Reliever Gary Majewski allowed two unearned runs on four hits and no walks with three strikeouts over 2.2 innings.
Memphis posted two-spots in each of the first two innings. Nick Stavinoha had a two-run double in the first, and Tyler Greene drilled a two-run homer in the second. Memphis extended its lead with three runs on four his in the sixth. The Redbirds capped the night with a two-run seventh on three hits and an Express error.
Matt Downs, in his first start with the Express, singled with one out in the first, and Matt Kata doubled with one out in the second. The Express did not get another hit until Edwin Maysonet's one-out single in the ninth. Round Rock managed only four base-runners on the evening, and Memphis pitchers faced three over the minimum. Downs was caught stealing in the first, and J.B. Shuck walked after Maysonet's single in the ninth.
Greene, Stavinoha, Daniel Descalso and Mark Hamilton all had two-hit games for the Redbirds and all but Descalso also had two RBI. Matt Pagnozzi added two RBI, while Greene and Amaury Cazana each scored twice.
Round Rock and Memphis continue their five-game series Saturday with a 7:05 p.m. CDT first pitch at AutoZone Park. Right-hander Sergio Perez (3-3, 5.27 ERA) will start on the mound for the Express, while right-hander P.J. Walters (7-5, 4.13 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Redbirds.
