New Orleans Powers Past Sounds, 10-4

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The New Orleans Zephyrs belted four home runs en route to a 10-3 win over the Sounds on Friday evening at Greer Stadium, snapping Nashville's four-game winning streak.

The crowd of 6,397 on hand pushed the Sounds' seasonal attendance over the 300,000-fan plateau for the 10th straight season.

The Zephyrs' four home runs on the evening matched their highest single-game total of the year.

The bottom of the New Orleans order did the majority of the damage as the visitors' #5 through 8 hitters combined to go 11-for-19 with eight RBIs and seven runs scored on the evening.

Right-hander Brian Lawrence (11-8) worked a quality start for the Zephyrs to pick up the victory, holding the Sounds to two runs on six hits over seven innings of work.

New Orleans shortstop Brian Barden spotted the visitors a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning with a one-out solo homer to left off Sounds starter Marty McLeary.

The Sounds loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the frame but were unable to score against Lawrence, as the right-hander induced a popout from Luis Cruz and an inning-ending groundout from Ray Olmedo. Nashville finished just 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position on the night.

Zephyrs left fielder John Raynor made it a 2-0 game in the second when he led off with his second home run of the year, a solo shot to left-center off McLeary.

Nashville again had its chance to score thwarted in the bottom of the inning after putting runners on first and third with one out. Adam Stern hit a tapper back to the mound and Lawrence threw to the plate to retire Norris Hopper as he attempted to put the Sounds on the board.

The Z's tacked on a pair of runs in the fourth to up their lead to 4-0. Danny Richar and Bryan Petersen led off with back-to-back doubles before catcher Chris Hatcher bounced a one-out RBI single up the middle off McLeary.

New Orleans continued to pile on in the fifth, plating five two-out runs against McLeary to chase the right-hander from the ballgame while extending the lead to 9-0. Richar and Petersen contributed RBI singles before Hatcher slugged a three-run longball to right, his second roundtripper of the year.

McLeary (6-9) took a loss for the second straight start after he surrendered a career-high nine runs on 11 hits over his 4 2/3 innings of work. The veteran had allowing eight runs in an outing several times, most recently on June 23 at Memphis.

Scott Cousins upped his hitting streak to 11 games for New Orleans in the sixth when he led off the inning with his 14th home run of the year, a line-drive solo shot to right off Sounds reliever Donovan Hand.

Joe Koshansky put the Sounds on the board in the bottom of the sixth when he crushed his team-leading 22nd home run of the season, a leadoff solo shot off Lawrence. With the tater, Big Joe extended his longest hitting streak of the year to seven games.

Nashville got another run back in the seventh when Stern doubled with two outs and scored in unearned fashion when Eric Farris followed with an infield single coupled with a throwing error by Barden at shortstop.

Martin Maldonado made it a 10-3 contest in the home half of the eighth when he lifted a sacrifice fly to center to plate Cruz, who opened the inning with a single that greeted Z's reliever Brett Sinkbeil.

Infielder Johnny Raburn closed out the contest with a scoreless top of the ninth on the mound for Nashville, making his second pitching appearance of the year. Raburn has posted three scoreless innings for the Sounds this season.

Stern (3-for-5) opened the contest with a single for the Sounds to extend his longest hit streak of the year to 10 games, marking Nashville's seventh double-digit streak of 2010. The outfielder is hitting a PCL-best .375 since July 1st (48-for-128).

The teams continue the series with 6:35 p.m. meeting on Saturday. Left-hander Sam Narron (8-7, 4.24) will man the bump for the Sounds and face New Orleans spot starter Scott Strickland (4-3, 4.30), who makes his first start of the year for the Z's. The Sounds' final fireworks show of the season will follow the on-field action.
