Tacoma Rainiers News Release
TACOMA, Wash. - Designated hitter Rob Brantly's third home run of the year propelled the Tacoma Rainiers (21-15) to a 3-2 victory over the Omaha Storm Chasers (20-15) on Saturday night at Cheney Stadium.
Tacoma starting pitcher Joe Wieland held the Storm Chasers to two runs on seven hits across 6.0 innings of work - he walked two and struck out three.
The Rainiers were led by Brantly (1x3) with two runs batted in, Ed Lucas (1x3) with one RBI, and Mike Baxter, who notched two walks and two stolen bases.
The Storm Chasers opened the scoring with a double steal in the bottom of the first inning. Brett Eibner lined a two-out single to right field and came around the score the game's opening run after stealing home on a throw down to second base by Mike Zunino attempting to nab Jose Martinez.
Omaha extended their lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning. Left fielder Travis Snider doubled down the left field line and came around to score on an RBI double from Balbino Fuenmayor, giving Omaha a 2-0 lead.
Rainiers First baseman Efren Navarro led off the bottom of the fourth inning by smashing a double to the left-center field gap. Navarro advanced to third base on a wild pitch by Jonathon Dziedzic and scored on a sacrifice fly to left field from Lucas, cutting Omaha's lead to one run at 2-1.
The Rainiers grabbed the lead two batters into the bottom of the seventh inning. Lucas led off the frame with a double to right field and Brantly followed with a two-run home run to right field to give Tacoma a 3-2 advantage. The home run marks Brantly's third of the year and second in as many days.
Relievers Casey Coleman and Blake Parker combined to hold Omaha hitless over the final 3.0 innings of the game. Parker earned his seventh save of the season after working a perfect ninth inning.
Tacoma and Omaha square off again tomorrow, Sunday, May 15 at 1:35 p.m. PT. The Rainiers are scheduled to start right-hander Cody Martin (4-2, 6.37), while the Storm Chasers are slated to go with righty Brooks Pounders (3-1, 3.41).
