El Paso Chihuahuas News Release
The El Paso Chihuahuas hung on to beat the Las Vegas 51s 12-10 Friday after leading by nine runs as late as the fifth inning. The 51s had the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the ninth when Jose Dominguez got Dilson Herrera to pop out to first base and end the game. The Chihuahuas and 51s split the four-game series.
El Paso's offense burst for eight runs in the top of the third inning, falling one run short of the team record for runs in an inning. The Chihuahuas had eight hits in the rally, including two each by Casey McElroy and Yeison Asencio. The Chihuahuas led 10-1 in the third and 11-2 in the fifth.
Las Vegas climbed back into the game when Dilson Herrera hit a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning, his second home run of the night and sixth of the season, with five coming against El Paso. After a three-run bottom of the eighth, Las Vegas trailed 11-9, then both teams plated a single run in the ninth.
Carlos Asuaje went 3-for-6 with three RBIs, falling a triple shy of the Chihuahuas' first cycle. Manuel Margot stole two bases and now has 11 on the season, the fifth most in the Pacific Coast League. McElroy went 2-for-3 with an RBI and three walks and is now hitting .435 through his first 62 at bats.
El Paso starting pitcher Frank Garces hit a pitch to right field in his second career plate appearance to notch his first professional hit. All nine starting Chihuahuas had at least one hit by the fifth inning.
