Tacoma Rainiers News Release
TACOMA, Wash. - Seven walks and 14 hits were enough to propel the Round Rock Express to a 14-3 series finale win over the Tacoma Rainiers on Monday afternoon at Cheney Stadium.
Rainiers starting pitcher Stephen Landazuri lasted 3.0 innings in his fourth career Triple-A start, allowing 10 runs (eight earned) on seven hits with four walks.
Lucas Luetge pitched 4.0 innings of relief for Tacoma, surrendering no runs while allowing just two hits. Tony Zych and Leury Bonilla, who also played at shortstop and first base in the game, combined for 2.0 innings to finish up the game for Tacoma. It was Bonilla's second pitching appearance of the season, marking the first time he has appeared in two games on the mound since 2010.
The Express jumped on Landazuri early, scoring a pair of runs in their first turn at the plate. Tyler Pastornicky's one-out walk was followed by a walk from Rougned Odor and a two-RBI double from Jake Smolinski that gave Round Rock a 2-0 lead.
Smolinksi plated another run in the third inning with his second double of the day. He was followed by Ed Lucas and Tomas Tellis, who both knocked in runs with an RBI single and RBI double, respectively, to give Round Rock a 5-0 advantage.
Back-to-back hit batters by Landazuri with the bases loaded in the fourth inning brought in a pair of Express runs, and ended the day for Tacoma's starter. Luetge retired the first two batters he faced with strikeouts, but surrendered a two-RBI single to Brett Nicholas. Back-to-back walks brought in one more run for Round Rock, and extended their lead to 10-0.
Kivlehan got the Rainiers on the board with a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning. It was his team-leading ninth long ball of the season.
Round Rock scored once in the eighth on an RBI single from Michael Choice and three times in the ninth inning to wrap up their scoring.
John Hicks brought in the final run of the game for the Rainiers with an RBI single in the final half inning of play, producing the final margin of 14-3.
Tacoma (22-30) opens up a four-game inter-conference series with New Orleans (24-24) tomorrow, June 2. The Rainiers will send right-hander Danny Farquhar (0-0, 16.20) to the mound to face off against Zephyrs lefty Just Nicolino (4-1, 2.05). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
