Romak, Zito Honored For Exceptional Performances

ROUND ROCK, Texas - Jamie Romak of the Reno Aces and Barry Zito of the Nashville Sounds showcased their talents at a high-level from May 25-31 to earn the Pacific Coast League's Player and Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced today.

Jamie Romak led the PCL in nine offensive statistics, highlighted by a .538 batting average, four home runs, and 14 RBIs. The third baseman collected hits in all seven games he played for a total of 14 for the week. He also scored seven runs and accumulated 29 total bases. Romak powered Reno to a 13-1 victory in the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday at Iowa, by hitting two home runs and producing six RBIs. He helped the Aces to another win Sunday against New Orleans with three hits, including a go-ahead 2-run double in the seventh inning. The London, Ontario native is batting .283 this season with eight home runs and 31 RBIs.

Romak, 29, joined the Arizona Diamondbacks' organization on Nov. 22, 2014, when he signed as a minor league free agent. He has played professionally for 13 seasons and made his major league debut in 2014 with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Player of the Week honor is Romak's first since 2010, when he won the award three times that year with the Wilmington Blue Rocks in the Carolina League. This is the second-straight week an Aces player has been recognized by the PCL, after Nick Evans won the award for May 18-24. The last time Reno won back-to-back Player of the Weeks was in May 2011 with Collin Cowgill and Willy Mo Pena.

Barry Zito recorded two shutout victories this week for the Sounds, while compiling 11 strikeouts and a .111 opponents' average in 14 innings. In his first start Tuesday at Sacramento, the lefty scattered three hits and two walks over six innings, as Nashville went on to defeat the River Cats 3-0. Zito struck out a season-high six batters in his next win Sunday against Las Vegas, while limiting the 51s to two hits in eight innings. His outing was the longest by a Sounds pitcher this season. The University of Southern California alum owns a 3-4 record and 4.12 ERA in 11 starts this year with Nashville.

The 2015 season marks Zito's 17th in professional baseball, after signing a minor league deal with the Oakland Athletics on Feb. 17, 2015. The 37-year-old returns to the Athletics' organization, after pitching for the San Francisco Giants from 2007-13. This is the second Pitcher of the Week accolade he has received from the PCL in his career. Zito's first award came as a member of the River Cats in 2000, the same season he won an American League Pitcher of the Week with Oakland. He and Kerry Wood are the only players since 1998 to win a weekly honor from both the PCL and MLB in the same season.
